ONEONTA, NY — Union College scored two goals in the second half to defeat Hartwick College's field hockey team, 2-1, on Tuesday evening at Wright Stadium in Oneonta. Tyler Willey (Stockton, NJ) scored less than three minutes into the second session to tie the score, and Lizzy Moran (Unionville, PA) scored the game-winner less than 12 minutes later for the Dutchwomen, who improve to 9-2 overall and have now won five straight games. The Hawks fall to 4-8.
Hartwick jumped on the visiting Dutchwomen early in the contest as the Hawks fired the first three shots of the game on the Union cage in the opening two minutes. Goalie Sarah Rios (Queensbury, NY) handled the 'Wick shots, but following a penalty corner, senior Jill Hughes (Brownsville, VT) got one past her for her team-leading fourth tally of the season. Hughes took a close pass from classmate Annie Yager (Greene, NY) and slammed it home from right in front of the cage 2:22 into the contest.
In the second half, Union evened the score after just 2:53 as Lauren Politz (Goffstown, NH) played the ball into the middle from the left side of the cage where Willey was waiting to knock it in. Moran would give Union the lead at the 49:34 mark as she finished off an individual effort by teammate Kelsey Powers (Naples, ME). Powers dribbled through the Hartwick defense before putting the ball past an oncoming Chapman where Moran could finish into an open cage.
The Hawks took six penalty corners in the final 19 minutes with Danielle Greene (Woodstock, VT) and Samantha Galm (Kingston, NY) both putting shots on target, but reserve goalkeeper Liz Stanford (Acton, MA) kept both shots out to preserve the win for the Dutchwomen.
Union finished the match outshooting the Hawks 11-7. Hartwick edged the Ducthwomen in penalty corners, 10-9, including an 8-4 margin in the second half. Chapman finished the game with five saves.
Rios made three saves in the first half. Stanford recorded two saves and earned the win.
