Wayne State Downs Dutchwomen 6-2

Suzy Pocock
SCHENECTADY, NY -- Senior forward Suzy Pocock scored her third goal of the season and second in as many games as the Union College women's ice hockey lost to Wayne State, 6-2, Saturday at Messa Rink. With the defeat the Dutchwomen go to 0-5-1, while the Warriors improve to 2-1-1.

The Wayne State Warriors scored three times in the first period and got two goals from Alyssa Baldin.
The Warriors opened the scoring at 7:13 of the first period on a two on one break away. Sam Poyton slid the puck across the crease to teammate Lindsay DiPietro who took a quick wrist shot that beat senior goaltender Lundy Day (Calgary, AB) high on the glove side.

Union would retaliate at 11:32 on a five-on-four power play. Lauren Hoffman (Marcy, NY) took a shot from the slot that Wayne State goalie Delayne Brian was able to stop, but could not control the rebound. Pocock battled through the Warriors defense and was able to knock the puck past Brian to even the score. The goal marked the fifth time on the season that the Dutchwomen have scored on the power play.

Wayne State would respond with two markers from Melissa Boal and Alyssa Baldin to take a 3-1 lead into the first intermission.

Wayne State added a power play goal in the second period to make the score 4-1. Veronique Laramee-Paque took the puck in the right face-off circle and sent it to the left side where Natalie Payne was waiting to one time the puck home.

Union would attempt a comeback in the third period as junior defenseman Jackie Koetteritz (Breckenridge, CO) scored her second goal on the season 50 seconds into the third period. The Warriors would answer back with two power-play goals, one from Laramee-Paque, the other from Baldin, her second goal of the game.

Day finished the game with 44 saves for the Dutchwomen, while Brian stopped 15 of 17 shots she faced in net for the Warriors.

Union takes to the road next weekend as they play North Dakota Friday night at 8:00 p.m.
