SCHENECTADY, NY – The Dutchmen rebounded for a 3-1 victory against Harvard Saturday night at Messa Rink for their first ECAC Hockey victory of the season and their first win against the Crimson at home since the 2000-01 season. Redshirt freshman
Luke Cain led the way with a career-high three points – his first multi-point game of his career – as Union improves to 4-2-2 and 1-1-0 in the conference. Harvard drops to 2-2-0 overall and in ECACH.
For the second straight night senior defenseman
Lane Caffaro potted a goal, his second of the season and 17th of his career. He is now in soul possession of the third spot among Union defensemen all-time with 64 career points.
Sophomore netminder
Corey Milan earned his 10th career victory by turning aside 27 shots, including 12 in the final period.
The Dutchmen fell behind 1-0 at 9:10 of the first period on a goal by Alex Killorn, who was set up by Steve Rolecek. The goal marked the fifth time this season Union fell behind to begin the game and the fourth time it has fought back to earn at least one point. The team is 3-1-1 in those games.
Cook got things rolling just over two minutes after Harvard struck. Simpson fed a pass to Cain, who fired a shot low on net,. Cook was on the doorstep for the marker at 11:16.
Caffaro added to the lead 17:19 into the second with a wrist shot at the top of the left circle. Boileau and Cain were credited with the helpers.
Union put the finishing touches on the win at 12:30 into the third when Christansen caused a turnover in his defensive end and raced along side Cain for a two-on-one. Christansen made a soft pass across his body and Cain juked Harvard goaltender Matt Hoyle out of position and slid the puck over the goal line, while falling down.
The Dutchmen held a 32-28 advantage over the Crimson, who had two goals disallowed.
Hoyle made 29 saves and is now 2-2-0.
The first two Union goals came on the power play (2-for-6), while Harvard's first marker came with the man advantage (1-for-6).
During the first intermission 1985 graduate and 2008 Union College Athletics Hall of Fame inductee Gill Egen was acknowledged by the Messa faithful. Egen is Union's all-time leading goal scorer with 83 and is third all-time in points with 147.
Union continues play at Messa Rink on Friday, Nov. 14 for a 7 p.m. contest against Quinnipiac. The game will be the second against the Bobcats this season. Union erased a 4-0 first period deficit on Oct. 17 at the Mutual of Omaha Stampede to skate away with its first victory of the season (6-5 in overtime).
