ORONO, ME – Sophomore forward
Adam Presizniuk registered Union's goal in a 3-1 setback at Maine on Friday at Harold Alfond Arena. With the loss, the Dutchmen go to 8-6-1 overall and 6-2-2 in non-conference action, while the Black Bears improve to 9-5-1 and 4-1-0
Presizniuk, who entered the game tied for second in ECAC Hockey with 15 points, registered his team-leading eighth goal of the season and 15th of his career. He leads all Dutchmen in goals, assists (eight) and points (16). In the last three games, the Calgary native has registered three goals and seven points.
Sophomore forward
Corey Milan, making his 13th start of the season, made 32 saves, including 16 in the first, five in the second and 13 in the third.
Entering the game, Milan carried a shutout streak of 95:00 minutes and thanks to help from his defenseman and a few stellar saves he was able to extend that streak well into the first.
Sophomore defender
Brock Matheson kept the score at zeros by denying sophomore Tanner House of a wrap around into a wide-open goal. Moments later Milan hushed the Maine crowd by making a sliding save to rob freshman Will O'Neill of a one-timer goal.
At the other end, Presizniuk registered his sixth goal against non-conference opponents off a deflection from a Caffaro try at 8:58. Sophomore forward and the team's second leading scorer
Stéphane Boileau picked up his team-leading ninth assist of the season.
The Black Bears rebounded and ended Milan's streak at 107:45 when freshman Brian Flynn scored with a two-man advantage 12:45 into the game.
Senior defenseman Matt Duffy scored on a wrist shot from top of the circle through traffic to put the home team up 2-1 at 16:14. Freshman forward Kyle Soloman and sophomore Robby Dee had the assists.
In the second, Union threatened with a power play around the midway point. Sophomore forward
John Simpson nearly tied the score on a deflection while racing towards the net and Presizniuk almost knotted his second while cutting through the Maine defense.
However, the Black Bears were able to kill the penalty and then add to their lead at the 10:43 with a goal from House, setup by freshmen Brian Flynn and Gustav Nyquist.
Milan was back at it in the third, blanking two prime chances by the Black Bears on the power play 7:02 into the period. Both saves involved him moving left to right in the splits.
Union were handed a two-man advantage with 1:26 remaining in the game and with Milan on the bench, Union went had three extra men on the ice. Maine, however, held on and skated away with the win.
For the game, Union totaled 22 shots and went 0-for-7 on the power play, while Maine had 35 tries and went 1-for-7 on with the man advantage.
The Dutchmen will try and tame the Black Bears again Saturday at 7 p.m.
