Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Comeback Cut Short; Dutchmen Lose 5-4

Box Score

PROVIDENCE, RI –
Freshman forward Kelly Zajac registered a career-high four points, but Brown
prevailed with a 5-4 victory against the Union College men's ice hockey team on Friday night at Meehan Auditorium. Union goes to 6-5-1 overall and 1-4-0 in ECAC Hockey, while Brown improves to 1-6-2 and 1-3-2.

Senior defenseman Brendan Milnamow (1G-1A) and junior defender Mike Schreiber (1G-2A) each registered multi-point games and senior co-captains Lane Caffaro and Matt Cook both registered a point.

Sophomore goaltender Corey Milan posted 18 saves, including six in each period. He goes to 12-13-7 for his career.

Union stuck on the power play only 1:13 into the contest when Milnamow fired a slap shot past the glove of Brown goaltender Dan Rosen. The goal, which was setup by Zajac and Schreiber, was Milnamow's third goal in as many games and career-high fourth of the season.  The goal was the quickest scored by the Dutchmen since Schreiber scored 1:05 at Quinnipiac on Nov. 30, 2007.

Milan kept the momentum on his team's side by stopping a breakaway by Brown sophomore Harry Zolnierczyk less than two minutes later.

Brown was given a 5-on-3 power play for 53 seconds with 6:12 remaining in the first and after sophomore defender Brock Matheson's stick broke, junior Devin Timberlake evened the score on a rebound 14:03 into the period.

The Bears went ahead during the back end of what was left of the remaining power play at 15:50.  After Brown had trouble exiting its own zone, the puck ended going the length of the ice, but a no-icing call allowed the home team to put pressure deep and senior Matt Vokes cashed in for his third of the season.

Six-year head coach Nate Leaman's team responded with two quick goals before the end of the period. First Zajac scored into a wide-open net down low after a generous bounce off the end boards at 17:07. The goal was his fourth of the season.

Caffaro registered his fifth marker of the year on a semi-breakaway at 17:31. Fellow co-captain Cook and Zajac had the assists on the play.

Brown regained the lead in the second with goals from freshman Jack MaCleellan (7:22) and Timberlake (8:16).

Senior Ryan Garbutt gave Brown a 5-3 advantage 4:05 into the second with a power play goal setup by freshman Jeff Buvnow and Vokes.

Schreiber registered his second goal of the season and third point of the game by throwing the puck on net 9:02 into the third period. The puck got deflected by a Brown defender and sailed into the top right corner. Zajack fed Schreiber the puck with a pass along the boards from behind the net.

Union held a 41-23 advantage in shots, marking the first time the Dutchmen have held an opponent to under 30 shots and lost.

On the power play, the Dutchmen finished 2-for-7, while the Bears went 3-for-6.

Union continues its road trip on Saturday with a 7 p.m. contest at Ivy League foe Yale at 7 p.m.
