Powers powers Dutchwomen to 3-2 field hockey win over Utica

SCHENECTADY, NY -- Sophomore forward Kelsey Powers (Naples, ME) scored two goals, including the game winner in the final second, to lift Union to a 3-2 win over Utica in a non-league field hockey game at Frank Bailey Field Wednesday night. The Dutchwomen are off to their best start since 1993, when Union started the season 5-0. Utica fell to 2-5.

Powers took a corner from Lizzy Moran (Unionville, PA) and blasted home her second of the day and third of the year, from 15 yards out on the left side of the net. Katie Kutas (New York Mills, NY) had tied the game at 2-2 for the Pioneers when she scored from the right side and hit the opposite end of the net from a feed from Rebecca Corsones (Kingston, NY).

Hayley Coon (Camden, NY) scored her third of the year to put the visitors on the board at 21:19. Her goal came off a rebound and she shot it in from six yards straight out in front. The Dutchwomen tied it when Anne Hanson (White River Junction, VT) notched her second of the year. Her tally also came off a rebound, from five yards in front.

Powers gave the Dutchwomen their first lead at 49:47, early in the second half. She picked up a deflected, loose ball off a corner and shot it from four yards out.

Union goaltender Sarah Rios (Queensbury, NY) and Liz Stanford (Acton, MA) each made two saves in a half. Utica netminder Amanda McDonnell (Sagamore Beach, MA) stopped 17 shots. Union had a 27-9 total shot advantage and also had the edge in corners, 17-5.

The Dutchwomen continue a busy week when they open Liberty League play Friday at Skidmore. Union then hosts Wheaton Saturday in a game to be played at College Park at 1 p.m.
