Box Score

CANTON, NY –
Despite two goals from junior right-winger Mario Valery-Trabucco the Union College men's ice hockey team (12-11-1, 5-7-0) experienced a 5-2 loss at the hands of St. Lawrence (12-10-2, 4-6-2) on Saturday at Appleton Arena. Valery-Trabucco extended his scoring streak to a career-long seven games with his eighth and ninth goals of the season.

The multi-point game was Valery-Trabucco's fourth of the season. It was also his second multi-goal game of the season and second in three games.

His first goal, which came at 8:03 of the second, was setup by juniors Mike Schreiber and Jason Walters. His second goal at 14:21 of the same period added Walters and senior defenseman Lane Caffaro to the score sheet.

Walters posted his team-high tying fifth multi-point game of the season.  He is now third on the team with 19 points and 11 assists.

The Saints, who were coming off a 7-6 overtime loss to RPI, came out attacking unloading seven shots in the first 10 minutes of play, but sophomore goaltender Corey Milan was up to the challenge. Less than five minutes into the game, the sophomore flashed the leather with a glove save on St. Lawrence sophomore Aaron Bogosian.

Union fought back and eventually pulled the shots even (12-12) by the end of the period, but Saints sophomore Jared Keller scored 17:31 into the first on a one-timer off a pass from senior Brock McBride. Senior defenseman Shawn Fensel picked up the second assist.

A long outlet pass off the ensuing faceoff almost redeemed the Dutchmen. Senior left-winger Matt Cook got behind the defense for a breakaway, but dinged one off the left post.

A give-and-go with 42 seconds remaining by, freshman right-winger Brian Yanovitch and sophomore center John Simpson threatened to give Union the momentum, but junior goaltender Alex Petizian got his right pad on the attempt.

Senior defenseman Mike Harr struck the iron early in the second, but Saints junior Mike McKenzie put his team up 2-0 at 5:26 into the period. Keller and Bogosian had the helpers.

At 8:03 of the second, Valery-Trabucco made the score 2-1 with two whacks in front. Schreiber accepted a pass from Walters at the point and fired towards the goal where Valery-Trabucco was all alone.

Valery-Trabucco turned the red light on again at 14:21 on an odd-man rush. The junior cashed in on a rebound off a shot from Walters.

The Saints regained the lead less than three minutes later at 17:16 when McKenzie scored from his stomach off a pass from senior Kevin Devergilio.

A power-play goal at 17:47 by Devergilio put St. Lawrence back up by two and a tally at 13:44 by senior defenseman Jared Ross produced the final result.

Milan posted 29 saves on 34 shots, while Petizian had 30 stops on 32 tries.

The Dutchmen remain on the road for a pair of conference games next weekend. They face Harvard at 7 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 30 and Dartmouth at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 31.
