Dutchwomen lose close meet to Ithaca; Dutchmen down Bombers

SCHENECTADY, NY -- Five different Dutchmen won individual events to help lead Union to a 126-117 men's swimming & diving home victory over Ithaca Saturday at the Alumni Gym Pool. The Dutchwomen, also competing in the final home meet of the season, lost to Ithaca, 129-114.

Mary Kate Baumann, who earned Liberty League weekly honors this week, followed up with another strong meet. She won the 400 individual medley at 4:45.38, and the 200 backstroke at 2:09.33. She had the first leg of the winning 400 free relay, which included Vanessa Athanas, Erica Fugger and Priscilla Wright. That group tiemd at 3:42.66, almost six seconds ahead of the second place unit from Ithaca.

Other winners for the Dutchwomen were this week's Liberty League Rookie of the Week, Kaleigh Ahern in the 50 free (25.13) and Athanas in the 200 fly (2:18.00).

Brian Scarlett continued his super season. He started off the day leading the victorious 400 medley relay team that won with a time of 3:39.58. He was followed in that race by Alex Boyd, Lucas Tiziani and Chris Heske. Scarlett won the 200 individual medley, clocking at 2:01.91, and was the first place finisher in the 200 backstroke at 1:58.98.

Tiziani touched at 2:01.13 to win the 200 fly by over two seconds, and Steve Schapp was the victor in the 500 freestyle at 4:49.05. Boyd clocked at 2:17.58 for a nearly four second triumph in the 200 breaststroke.

Next up on the Union schedule is the men's state championships at Nottingham High School February 18-20, while the Dutchwomen will compete in the states at Nottingham February 25-26.
