SCHENECTADY, NY – Marianna Locke, a 2009 graduate of St. Lawrence, has been named an assistant coach on Union's women's ice hockey team, head coach Claudia Asano announced on Wednesday. Locke joins the Dutchwomen after spending the last four years playing for the Saints.
“Marianna is going to be a great addition to our coaching staff,” Asano said. “We are excited for her to get started. She will bring another dimension to our coaching staff.”
Locke, a native of Brasher Falls, NY, served as a coach for the Adirondack Regional Team at the 2009 Empire State Games, guiding her team to a bronze medal. She has also worked as a hockey instructor for Canadian Hockey Enterprises, Potsdam State Hockey School and Elite Hockey.
“I'm very excited to be joining the staff and the team,” Locke said. “Union is a great school and a prestigious college and I'm pleased that I was given this opportunity.”
A team captain for the Saints during the 2008-09 season and was the recipient of the Sara Devins Award, which is given as a joint award between ECAC Hockey and Hockey East and is presented annually to a player who "demonstrates leadership and commitment both on and off the ice."
In her four seasons with St. Lawrence, she became the 15th player its program history to score over 100 career points while helping her teams reach four consecutive NCAA Tournaments. She was a two-time ECAC Hockey Player of the Week winner and is in the top-five in school history in both power play and game-winning goals.
She finished her career with 63 goals and 55 points for 118 points. In 2008-09 she was fourth on the team with 27 points, including 10 tallies and 17 assists.
Locke takes over for Ashley Shaidle who resigned from her assistant coach position in April.
The Dutchwomen open the 2009-10 regular season on Saturday, Oct. 3 with a 2 p.m. game at Northeastern. The home-opener follows two weeks later on Friday, Oct. 16 with a 7 p.m. outing against Sacred Heart.
