St. Lawrence came back from a 1-0 deficit with two second period power play goals en route to a 3-1 ECAC Hockey victory over Union Saturday at Messa Rink. The Saints now stand 9-7-5 overall and 6-3-2 in the league while the Dutchwomen are 4-17-1 overall and 0-9-1 in ECAC Hockey.
Alana Marcinko was solid again between the Union pipes, as she made a career-high 40 saves on the day. Saint Lawrence outshot the Dutchwomen, 43-18, and Maxie Weisz made 17 stops in the Saints net. Marcinko made 77 saves in the weekend series against Clarkson and Saint Lawrence.
Union opened the scoring when Callee Heywood scored on a two-on-one at 4:31 of the first. Heywood came in to the left of Weisz and as a screen developed in front, held the puck then wristed it for her third of the season.
With five seconds left, Marcinko made a nice quick right pad save from a shot off the point off the face off, as St. Lawrence had a power play begin with just eight seconds left in the period. Union had the 1-0 lead as Marcinko made 14 stops in the stanza.
As the power play carried over into the start of the second period, St. Lawrence knotted the game at 1-1 with just 32 seconds elapsed. Marcinko stopped an initial shot in tight from Kayla Sullivan, but Kelly Sabatine converted off the rebound for her sixth of the season.
The Saints almost took the lead with 6:33 left but a blast from Sullivan from the right point was deflected in front and hit the post high to the right of Marcinko.
St. Lawrence took the lead with 3:55 remaining in the second period, with another power play goal. After two shots stopped in tight on Marcinko, Alley Bero notched her fifth of the season on the third shot, with an assist credited to Tara Akstull. The Saints scored an empty netter with 32 seconds left in the third, as Bero scored her second of the day.
Union continues ECAC Hockey play next weekend with games Friday at Yale (7 p.m.) and Saturday at Brown (4 p.m.). Saint Lawrence hosts Cornell Friday and Colgate Saturday.
