SCHENECTADY, NY -- Junior tailback Marcus Washington ran for 146 yards and the eventual game winning touchdown to lead St. Lawrence University to a 23-14 Liberty League football victory at Union College Saturday. The Saints are now 3-0 in the league and 3-4 overall while the Dutchmen fell to 2-2 in the league and 2-3 overall.
JP Kearney was 10 for 17 for 146 yards and Ethan Sutton had four catches for 68 yards. Sutton also tossed for a touchdown, a nine yard score to Demetrias Haseotes in the fourth quarter. Trevor Saunders had eight tackles and Andrew Cox made seven stops for the Saints.
Union was led by senior running back
Chris Coney, who was just short of his fourth 100 yard rushing game fo the year. Coney finished with 97 yards on 19 carries with two touchdowns. He also had a 20 yard reception.
Connor Gallo had his first career start at quarterback for the Dutchmen, and was 10 for 25 for 128 yards.
Justin Gallo led the Union receivers with five catches for 61 yards.
Steve Modliszewski recorded a game high 11 tackles and also had two tackles for losses for Union whitl
Sean Conerly and
AJ Rocchio each had nine tackles for the hosts.
St. Lawrence had 321 total yards in offense while the Dutchmen finished with 281. The win ended a 14 game Union winning streak in the series, and was the first Saints win over the Dutchmen since September 9, 1995. It was St. Lawrence's first win in Schenectady since September 27, 1969.
The Dutchmen opened the scoring when Coney scored from 12 yards out with 4:03 remaining in the first quarter. During the 10 play, 78 yard drive that consumed 4:26, Coney rushed five times for 21 yards. St. Lawrence tied the contest with 57 seconds left in the quarter. A Union fumble at the Dutchman 11 yard line was recovered by St. Lawrence cornerback Christian Bianchi and he ran it in for the 11 yard fumble return touchdown.
On the ensuing drive, the Dutchmen regained the lead. Coney found daylight for a 43 yard touchdown run 1:17 into the second quarter and it was 14-7 Union. The seven play drive went 62 yards.
St. Lawrence opened play in the third quarter and marched 56 yards in 14 plays to pull to within 14-10 with 8:00 remaining in the third quarter. Matthew Dodge nailed a 34 yard field goal. Washington had eight carries and 49 of the drive's 56 yards. The Saints forced a four-and-out on the next Union drive and took over at their own 29 yard line. Seven plays later Washington scored on a one yard run to give the Saints their first lead of the day, 17-14. Washington had five of the seven plays on the 71 yard drive that took 4:04.
Union had a seven play drive that went 58 seconds into the fourth quarter, but the Dutchmen were stopped on fourth down at the St. Lawrence 49. The Saints then consumed 6:04 of the clock and an 11 play, 49 yard drive ended with a nine yard Sutton pass to Haseotes and a 23-14 lead with 8:11 left in the fourth quarter.
Danny Lobo intercepted a Union pass at the Saints' 10 wth under three minutes remaining to seal the win.
Union returns home next week to host Salisbury in a non-league game at noon, while the Saints play at RPI Saturday at 1 p.m.
