FAIRBANKS, AK - Junior forward Kelly Zajac scored to break a 3-3 tie at 17:27 of the second period, leading the men's ice hockey team to a 4-3 win against Alaska-Anchorage in the Brice Alaska Goal Rush.
Sophomore goaltender Keith Kinkaid made a season-high 33 saves to help Union hold onto to the lead in a third period in which the Dutchmen were outshot 18-2 by the Seawolves.
With the win, Union improved to 3-1-0 on the season while Alaska-Anchorage fell to 1-2-1.
In the opening frame, Union jumped out to three-goal lead as senior forward Adam Presizniuk, sophomore forward Jeremy Welsh, and freshman forward Daniel Carr each scored to give the Dutchmen a 3-0 lead.
Presizniuk scored his first of the year on a wrist shot over the glove of Alaska-Anchorage goaltender Chris Kamal at 6:46 to give Union a 1-0 lead.
Union continued to put the pressure on the Seawolves, capitalizing on their first power play opportunity of the game.
At 9:58, Welsh took a cross ice feed from Mat Bodie and fired a shot off the inside of post in the top left corner for his fouth goal of the season, and fourth in as many games this season.
Carr scored on a deflection in front off an initial shot by Nolan Julseth-White to put Union up 3-0 at 12:49.
But Alaska-Anchorage rallied with goals from Matt Bailey at 16:26 and Scott Warner on the power play at 18:27 to cut Union's lead to 3-2 at the end of the first period.
Alaska-Anchorage forward Nick Haddad evened the score with a shorthanded goal at 6:53 of the second period, setting up Zajac's game-winner late in the frame.
Both Welsh and Kinkaid were named to the Brice Alaska Goal Rush All-Tournament Team. The complete All-Tournament Team is listed below.
