FAIRBANKS, AK – Alaska-Fairbanks forward Kevin Petovello scored with just under three minutes remaining to break a 1-1 tie, giving the Nanooks a 2-1 victory over the men's ice hockey team in the Brice Alaska Goal Rush.
With the loss, the Dutchmen fell to 2-1-0 on the season, while the Nanooks improved to 2-1-0
Union got off to another great start, scoring in the first ten minutes of the first period for the third consecutive game.
With the Dutchmen on the power play, sophomore forward Jeremy Welsh beat Alaska goaltender Scott Greenham over the shoulder for his third goal of the season, and third in as many games at 4:39. Freshman Josh Jooris set up the play with a pass from behind to slot, and freshman Mat Bodie was also credited with an assist on the play.
The Nanooks tied the game in the second period on failed clear attempt by the Dutchmen. Alaska-Fairbanks forward Andy Taranto skated into the slot with the puck and beat Kinkaid at 3:12 to even the contest at 1-1.
Union outshot the Nanooks 12-7 in the second period after being outshot 14-7 in the first period, but entered the third period tied.
In a tight third period where each team registered four shots on goal, the Nanooks broke the deadlock at 17:26 on a deflection by Petovello off a slow wrist shot from the point by Jarret Granberg.
Union will face Alaska-Anchorage at 4:05 p.m. (8:05 p.m. ET) in their second contest of the Brice Alaska Goal Rush.
