Jooris nets hat trick as men's ice hockey defeats Sacred Heart 9-0

– Freshman forward Josh Jooris scored a hat trick, and classmate Daniel Carr pitched in with a goal and three assists to lead the men's ice hockey team to an opening night 9-0 victory against Sacred Heart on Friday at Messa Rink.

 

The Dutchmen ran out to a 3-0 lead in the first period, with two goals from senior forward Stephane Boileau and another from Jooris and never looked back.

 

Wayne Simpson, Jeremy Welsh, and John Simpson added goals for the Dutchmen, who improved to 1-0 on the season.

 

Sophomore goaltender Keith Kinkaid made 19 saves for his second career shutout, and first since Nov. 27, 2009 against Lake Superior.

 

Union unloaded 50 shots on goal, and Sacred Heart goaltenders Steven Legatto and Olivier St. Onge combined for 41 saves.

 

The Dutchmen came out fast, firing the first five shots in the contest. Union would capitalize early when Boileau stuffed a rebound into the net at 7:13 off an initial shot by senior forward Justin Pallos.

 

Jooris added his first tally of the game, following up on a shot from Carr in the slot at 10:32. Boileau scored his second of the game on a defelection off a point shot from Brock Matheson at 10:59.

 

With a 3-0 lead in the second period, the Dutchmen killed off a 48-second two-man advantage for Sacred Heart after Union took a too many players on the ice penalty with Matheson sitting in the box for interference at 11:33.

 

Union potted its first power play goal of the year with the man advantage soon after, as Jooris scored his second of the game at 15:52.

 

After a Neil Fachini of Sacred Heart was assessed a five minutes for contact to the head, and a game misconduct, Union took a 5-0 lead on Wayne Simpson's first goal of the year.

 

With Union still holding a man-advantage in the third period, Jeremy Welsh would score the Dutchmen's third power play goal of the night at :42.

 

Carr and John Simpson added goals at even strength at 5:39 and 7:34 of the third period, and Jooris completed his hat trick while falling down on a breakaway at 13:17.

 

The victory was Union's fifth-consecutive season-opening victory and it is now 13-4-3 all-time in home openers.

The two teams will go at it again on Saturday at 7 p.m. at Messa Rink.
