Sophomore goaltender Keith Kinkaid made 19 saves, while RPI's Allen York stopped 18 shots for the Engineers.
With RPI's Matt Tinordi in the penalty box for roughing, Welsh took a pass from junior forward Kelly Zajac, and fired a shot through traffic from the point, beating York between the legs at 7:39 to give Union the lead for good.
With York pulled for an extra attacker, RPI's Mike Bergin appeared to score the game-tying goal with 7.6 seconds remaining in the contest, but referee Bryan Hicks ruled goaltender obstruction on RPI's C.J. Lee, negating the score.
Union scored the game's first goal for the 10th time in 11 games played this season. With the Dutchmen on the power play, freshman forward Josh Jooris found Daniel Carr with a cross-ice pass. Carr's shot beat York over the shoulder at 13:34 of the first period to give Union a 1-0 lead.
RPI evened the score late in the second period just as time expired on a Nolan Julseth-White tripping call. Nick Bailen's shot from straightaway beat Kinkaid to tie the game at 1 at 15:35.
With Union nursing a one-goal lead in the third period. Kinkaid came up with an impressive series of saves on Bailen, who led all skaters with seven shots in the contest. With 2:33 left to play, Kinkaid fell on a rebound on Bailen shot through traffic. At 1:20, Kinkaid stopped two more Bailen shots from the slot to protect Union's lead.
Union will continue their home-and-home series with RPI tomorrow night at Houston Field House at 7:00 p.m.
