Coney reaches 4,000 yard mark in 26-15 finale loss at Springfield

The Springfield College football team scored two touchdowns in the last 4:08 to defeat  Union, 26-15, this afternoon in a non-conference game at Amos Alonzo Stagg Field. With the win, Springfield upped its record to 8-2, while Union ends the season 2-7.

Union senior running back Chris Coney had 192 yards and two touchdowns on 31 carries. He ended his career with a total of 4,091 rushing yards, which made him the second player in Union history to record 4,000 or more rushing yards. Tom Arcidiacono '06 is the all-time leader with 4,915. Coney finished his career with 19 games of 100 or more rushing yards, and had six in his eight games in 2010.

The Dutchmen had leads of 6-0 and then 12-7 midway through the second half. Coney scored on a four yard run 34 seconds in the second quarter and after Antoine King of the Pride had a nine yard TD run with10:17 left, Coney broke free for a 52 yard scoring run with 9:53 left. The first Union PAT missed and the second was blocked. The Pride then scored with 6:31 left in the second period to take a 14-12 lead at the half on a 37 yard pass from Austin Bateman to Tim Brady.

After a scoreless third quarter, Union took a 15-14 lead on a 34-yard field goal by Blaise Ancona with 7:36 remaining in the game. But Springfield then scored the first of two TDs with 4:08 left on a Mark Safer 6-yard run, making it 20-15. The clinching score came on a 62-yard interception return by Matt Ramos with 2:43 left, making the final, 26-15.

Bateman had 94 yards on 19 carries for the Pride, while passing for 102 yards on four completions and 10 attempts. Brady had 74 yards on three receptions. Matt Ramos had nine tackles, including three for losses, along with the interception, while Union's Anthony Cassese had a game high 10 tackles.

Springfield had 450 yards of total offense, while limiting Union to 249. SC had 348 yards rushing to Union's 207. SC also finished with 102 yards passing to Union's 42. In first downs, SC had 23 to Union's 19. SC lost the ball once by fumble, but Union lost it twice on interceptions, both in the final 2:43 of the game.
