Welsh's hat trick leads No.13/13 Union to 8-1 victory over AIC

SCHENECTADY, N.Y.
– Sophomore forward Jeremy Welsh recorded his first career hat trick, and senior forward Justin Pallos added two goals and an assist to lead No. 13/13 Union (9-3-3, 3-2-1 ECAC Hockey) to an 8-1 win against American International College (4-9-0, 4-8-0 AHA) on Friday night in front of 1,391 at Messa Rink.
 
Senior goaltender Corey Milan picked up his first win of the season, making 14 stops in net through just over two periods of play. Freshman goaltender Troy Grosenick played the final 14:26 of the third period in net.
 
Welsh capped off his night with Union's final score of game at 7:37 of the third period, poking a rebound past AIC goaltender Ryan Kerpan.
 
Pallos got Union off to another great scoring, helping the Dutchmen get on the scoreboard first for the 12th time in 15 games this season. Pallos took a pass from senior forward Luke Cain and fired the puck on net from the slot. Kerpan made the initial save, but Pallos followed the shot to beat he goaltender low with the rebound.
 
With the game still 1-0, the Dutchmen killed off a five minute penalty to freshman forward Matt Hatch, who was whistled for a game misconduct hitting after the whistle penalty at 12:25, to preserve the lead.
 
Pallos would strike again in the second period, skating into the slot from behind the AIC net and stuffing his own rebound past Kerpan at 6:17.
 
Welsh scored his first goal of the night on the power play six minutes later, taking a feed from freshman forward Daniel Carr, skating into the slot and beating Kerpan with a wrist shot at 12:30.
 
Just over a minute later, junior forward Kelly Zajac fired a rebound from in tight over Kerpan for his seventh goal of the season at 13:40.
 
American International College forward Adam Pleskach scored the Yellow Jackets' lone goal of the night at 19:23, beating Milan over the shoulder on a partial breakaway from the neutral zone.
 
Union pulled away with three goals in a span of 3:42 in the third period. Senior forward John Simpson scored his third goal of year, with a shot off a pass across the slot from sophomore forward Kyle Bodie.
 
Just 39 seconds later, Welsh cut across the middle of the ice in the offensive zone and beat Kerpan with a wrist shot at 2:37 for his second goal of the night.
 
Bodie scored on a similar play at 5:40, cutting into the slot and beating Kerpan with a low wrist shot at 5:40 to make it 7-1.
 
Union outshot AIC 46-19 on the night and finished 1-for-2 on the power play, while holding the Yellow Jackets scoreless in their three power play attempts.
 
The Dutchmen will take on Army at Messa Rink tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m.
