Heywood's third period goal put Union briefly on top
Box Score

TROY, N.Y.  – The Union Dutchwomen ice hockey team overcame an early 2-0 deficit to take the lead late in the game but host RPI scored with 12 seconds left in regulation to force a 3-3 tie on Saturday afternoon. The contest marks the first tie between the two programs since January 4, 2008 - a 4-4 draw in Schenectady.

Rensselaer came out dominant from the opening face-off, but could not cash in until the second period as they built a 2-0 lead within the first four minutes of the middle stanza. Union made the change between the pipes as sophomore Alana Marcinko came on in relief of starter Kate Gallagher.

The Dutchwomen came alive soon after as Emma Rambo found the rebound of an Emilie Arseneault shot and buried it in for her first goal of the season. Dania Simmonds tied it at 2-all at 11:08 of the third and senior Callee Heywood gave Union their first lead of the game at 18:01.

Facing a 3-2 deficit with minutes left in regulation, RPI pulled netminder Sonja van der Bliek with 1:23 left on the clock in favor of the extra-attacker.  Despite pressure in the zone from Union, the Engineers were able to convert for the equalizer as junior Alisa Harrison won the face-off and chipped the puck back to sophomore Taylor Horton who tipped it to Sydney O'Keefe who quickly sent a backhanded shot toward the net, which sailed into the low left corner to tie things up.  Neither team could capitalize in the final seconds and would not put any shots on in the five minutes of overtime.

Gallagher made 15 saves in goal for Union. Marcinko had 25 saves. In the RPI net, van der Bliek finished with 15 saves.

RPI led in shots 43-18. Union was 2-for-4 on the power play while the Engineers were 1-for-7.

Union is back on home ice on Wednesday hosting the University of Connecticut at 7 pm.
