SCHENECTADY, NY -- Junior attack
Kristin Joyce scored five goals with an assist and junior goalkeeper
Cat Ruggiero made 16 saves to lead the #14 Union women's lacrosse team to an 11-5 victory over St. John Fisher at Frank Bailey Field Saturday. The Dutchwomen are now 1-2 on the season while the Cardinals fell to 0-3.
The Dutchwomen also got two goals from
Keelin Skurek and single tallies from
Jill LaForest,
Melissa Hine,
Abby Stohler and
Allie Cuozzo. Five different players scored for St. John Fisher, Trish Scudder (Corning, NY), Lauren Glavin (Syracuse, NY), Courtney Clare (West Genesee, NY), Meg Merriam (Baldwinsville, NY) and Mary Stimson (Cicero, NY).
Vicki Sahm (Baldwinsville, NY) made six saves in the Cardinals' net. St. John Fisher outshot the Dutchwomen, 36-25, and had a 41-25 ground ball advantage while winning 11 of the 18 draw controls.
Union converted three of five free position shots.
Clare opened the scoring 2:13 into the game with her third of the season for St. John Fisher. But Union scored three straight for a 3-1 lead on goals by Joyce, Cuozzo and LaForest, with Jill's fifth of the year coming with 13:38 left in the first half. Merriam made it a 3-2 game with a free position tally with 12:10 remaining, but Joyce scored three straight in a span of 3:45 and Hine notched her third of the year with 4:39 left for a 7-2 Dutchwomen lead at the half.
Joyce scored her 15th of the young season 3:28 into the second period, coming on a free position. Glavin notched #5 of the year at 21:45 and it was 8-3, but Union scored the next two on goals by Skurel and Stohler for a 10-3 lead with 16:31 left. Stimson made it 10-4 at 15:29 but 24 seconds later Skurek's free position shot converted for an 11-4 lead. Scudder closed out the scoring with 3:55 remaining for a Fisher tally.
Joyce moved into sixth all-time in Union career points with 163, four behind Courtney Lynch '89. Her 135 career goals now places her tied for fifth place with Nina Mandel '03.
Union is back in action March 23 at Washington and Lee, while St. John Fisher also is back on March 23 to host William Smith.
