SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY -- The Skidmore College field hockey team scored four goals in a 7:39 period at the end of the first half to help earn a 6-1 victory over Union in Saturday's Liberty League opener at Thoroughbred Field.
The 13
th-ranked Thoroughbreds improve to 3-1 overall and 1-0 league, while the Dutchwomen fall to 2-2 overall and 0-1 league.
Sophomore Celidih MacNeill opened up the scoring at the 20:41 mark when she picked up a loose ball of the keeper's pads and found the back of the goal. MacNeill added her second goal of the game and third of the season less than three minutes later, beating Union goalie Sarah Rios off a pass from Lauren Tobias to give Skidmore a 2-0 lead.
Just over a minute later, Katie Potter scored her first goal of the season, putting home a rebound off Carolyne McManama's shot for a three goal advantage. Christine Kemp made it 4-0 at the 28:02 mark when she beat the defender along the right wing and scored her fifth goal of the season.
The Dutchwomen were able to get on the board right before the end of the half as Lauren Winchell set up Alex King on a penalty corner that she hammered home from the top of the circle with 15 seconds remaining in the first half to make it 4-1.
The Thoroughbreds were able to add two more goals in the second half. Lauren McCarthy beat two defenders and scored her first goal of the season at the 52:29 mark. MCarthy set up Skidmore's final goal as she found freshman Kelly Blackhurst in front of the goal to make it 6-1.
Both goalies stepped up in the second half as Liz Catinella made all five of her saves to improve to 3-1 and Rios made nine of her 11 saves in the second half for Union.
The Thoroughbreds outshot the Dutchwomen 24-9 and held a 16-7 advantage in penalty corners.
Union hosts University of Rochester at 4 p.m. on Friday, September 24.
