SCHENECTADY, NY -- Melanie O'Connor scored with four minutes remaining in regulation to lift William Smith to a 4-3 see saw victory over Union College in Liberty League field hockey action at Frank Bailey Field Saturday afternoon. The Herons are now 8-1 on the season and 1-1 in the league while the Dutchwomen fell to 3-3 overall and 1-2 in the Liberty League.
The Herons trailed 3-2 before Emily Atwan notched her eighth of the season to tie it. Her shot from 15 yards out came at 57:30. Atwan assisted on the eventual game winner at 66:00. She took a pass off the corner and dished to the middle to O'Connor, who scored her third of the year for the victory.
isabel Zellweger gave the Duchwomen their first lead of the day at 50:51. She picked up her own rebound on the doorstep and tallied her third of the year for a 3-2 Union lead.
Kelsey Powers had tied it for the Dutchwomen at 46:50 on an assist from Catherine Moran.
William Smith had a 2-1 lead at the half. After Powers scored with an assist from
Alex King 13:58 into the game, Margaret McConnell got an assist from Atwan at 17:36 and scored from close in on the left side. O'Connor made it 2-1 Herons with just 1:56 left in the first half. Kiersten Hamilton passed to O'Connor, who scored from 12 yards out.
Union had two sucessive corners in the final seconds. As time ran out on the final corner, Powers took a pass to the right of William Smith goalkeeper Chelsea Snyder, but her high flip shot sailed just over the net to end the contest.
Snyder made five saves while Union's
Sarah Rios stopped six in the Dutchwomen nets. Unoin had an 18-14 shot advantage and had 13 corners to the Herons' 9.
Union hosts Castleton State for a non league game Tuesday night at 7 p.m., while William Smith hosts league rival Rochester Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
