POTSDAM, NY - The Union College Volleyball Team defeated Clarkson 3-1 Saturday afternoon, after falling to Vassar 3-2. After battling through five narrow sets, the Dutchwomen succumbed to the Brewers with scores of 19-25, 25-20, 17-25, 25-23 and 15-8. With scores of 25-20, 23-25, 25-19 and 25-17, the Golden Knights were handed their first conference loss of the season.
In the first match of the day, the Dutchwomen won the first set with help from sophomore
Marissa Vollmer, who had 31 digs against the Brewers. The squad seemed to have clinched the game in the fourth set with a lead of 23-18, but Vassar rallied and scored seven straight points to force the deciding fifth set. Sophomore
Casey Tepper led the team with 17 kills, while senior
Eve Richards tallied 15. Richards also recorded six service aces. Setter sophomore
Mackenzie Westfall had an impressive 47 assists and made 15 digs on the match. Junior
Nora Wood also had 11 kills.
In the defeat of Clarkson, who is first in the Liberty League Conference, Richards led with 22 kills and had a .422 hitting percentage. Tepper and freshman
Claire Kokoska tallied 11 kills each, and as a team Union had a .333 hitting percentage. Kokoska also recorded three service aces. Richards made 19 digs while Vollmer led with 21. To round out the match, Westfall register 42 assists, bringing her day total to 89.
The Dutchwomen, now 10-9 on the seaon, are set to host Skidmore College on Tuesday, October 4th, at 7:00 p.m.
