SU and Union, now 2-4 on the season, will square off again tomorrow at 4:00 p.m.
The Dutchwomen converted one of their three chances on the man advantage to erase a 2-0 deficit midway through the second period. Syracuse held a 34-27 shot advantage and went 0-for-4 on the power play.
The Orange jumped out to a 1-0 lead with 3:55 left in the first period on Casey Hirsch's second goal of the season. Hirsch, stationed in front of the net, batted down an airborne puck off of a shot by Nicole Ferrara and past Union goaltender Alana Marcinko. The junior made 31 saves on the evening.
SU made it 2-0 on LaCombe's first collegiate goal early in the second period, when she was on the receiving end of a Hirsch pass and hammered a shot past Marcinko for the score.
Union started to climb back into the game with a goal from freshman Christine Valente, her third of the season, with 7:03 left in the frame. The forward beat SU goaltender Jenesica Drinkwater (23 saves) while the Dutchwomen capitalized on a Syracuse penalty. Senior Lauren Hoffman and junior Rhianna Kurio assisted on Valente's second power play goal of the season.
Union wasted no time in knotting the game at two, as junior Jeannie Sabourin scored less than two minutes into the third period off of a feed from freshman Bryanne Panchuk. Panchuk then made it 3-2 in favor of the Dutchwomen with 8:36 left in regulation, as she stickhandled through a SU defenseman before roofing a shot over Drinkwater for the score. It was Sabourin's first goal of the season, while Panchuk tallied her second with help from Sabourin and senior Molly Kate Devin.
The Orange pulled Drinkwater in favor of the extra skater with 1:01 left in the stanza, and LaCombe was able to force overtime when she spotted a loose puck in front of the cage and snuck it through Marcinko.
Despite being outshot throughout the game, Union only needed one shot in the extra period. Heinhuis potted the game-winner in the waning seconds of overtime, giving the Dutchwomen their second win of the season. Senior Dania Simmonds and Valente were credited with assists.
This is the first time in the history of the two teams meeting that Union has defeated the Orange.
