SCHENECTADY, NY – The Dutchwomen left day one of their home tournament undefeated and without losing a single set. After taking down Hartwick College 3-0 with scores of 25-18 for each set, Union defeated SUNY Oswego 3-0 with scores of 25-11, 25-14 and 25-17. The squad is now 7-3 on the year.
In the first match of the tournament, sophomore Mackenzie Westfall led the team with 29 assists and nine digs. The setter confused the Hartwick squad at one point by sailing the ball over the net herself instead of passing it, helping Union clinch the set. At one point, the Dutchwomen had a 19-9 lead over the Hawks. Freshmen Shannon Hughes and Claire Kokoska, who had nine kills, had impressive matches. With quick plays and composed decision making, Union forced Hartwick to make several mistakes with the ball. Senior Eve Richards led the team with 10 kills and sophomore Marissa Vollmer led with digs.
Hartwick would not be the only team the Dutchwomen would sweep, as they took Oswego 3-0, as well. Richards dominated the Lakers with 11 kills while junior Nora Wood followed close behind with seven. Westfall tallied 13 assists and helped her squad reach a 17-9 lead while she served. Junior Kim Armstrong led the team with 18 assists and sophomore Casey Tepper had six kills. Vollmer helped complete the sweep, leading the team with seven digs.
In the final day of the Union Invitational, the Dutchwomen take on SUNY Cortland, tomorrow, at 12:00 p.m. and Utica at 2:00 p.m. Cortland is now 11-0 while Utica has a record of 0-10.
