VIRGINIA BEACH, VA - Head Volleyball Coach
Melissa DeRan tallied her first career win at Union Friday when the Dutchwomen defeated Virginia Wesleyan College 3-2. After winning their season opening match, the squad was defeated by Benedictine University 3-0.
After being down by scores of 21-25 for the first two sets, the Dutchwomen rallied and won three straight with scores of 25-22, 25-17, and 15-9. Senior
Eve Richards led the team with 22 kills and 12 digs. Sophomore
Casey Tepper contributed 12 kills and 17 digs, while sophomore
Marissa Vollmer led the team in digs with 22. Out of the 107 points scored by the Dutchwomen, junior
Kim Armstrong tallied 41 assists.
In the closing match of the evening, the Eagles won by scores of 25-20, 25-16 and 25-17. Richards again led the team in kills with 16 and Tepper followed with nine. Junior
Nora Wood had seven kills tin his match, bringing her evening total to 18. Tepper and Vollmer each tallied 16 digs while seniors
Ashleigh Baldwin and Richards posted seven and 10, respectively. Setter Armstrong made 29 assists, bringing her evening total to 70.
The Union squad are now 1-1 on the year and continue play in the Virginia Wesleyan Invitational. The Dutchwomen take on Hollins University tomorrow, September 3, at 12:00 p.m. and McMurry University at 2:00 p.m.
