Women's hockey renews Route 7 Rivalry against Rensselaer Saturday afternoon

Rhianna Kurio and the Dutchwomen will be trying to take the first of three games played between Union and RPI.

SCHENECTADY, NY - The Union Dutchwomen will renew the Route 7 Rivalry as they take on Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Saturday afternoon beginning at 4:00 p.m. Follow the Dutchwomen on Twitter at UnionWHockey to get live updates throughout the match against the Engineers.

Last Time Out
The Dutchwomen traveled to Boston, Mass. to take on then No. 6 Northeastern and No. 3 Boston University. Union was defeated 1-4 against the Huskies and 2-6 against the Terriers. Emma Rambo scored the game's first goal against the Huskies.Kathryn Tomaselli and Jessica Kaminsky scored on the power-play in the loss against Boston University. Alana Marcinko made 55 saves in the two games in Boston.Madeleine Dahl made her collegiate debut and made 11 saves in the match against Boston University.


Scouting RPI
The Engineers come into the match 1-2-1 overall. Rensselaer also played No. 6 Northeastern and No. 3 Boston University last weekend in which they lost both games. Boston University defeated the Engineers 3-2 and Northeastern won 1-0. Rensselaer went 9-21-4 last season and finished ninth in ECAC play last year. Eleeza Cox, Alexa Gruschow and Ali Svoboda lead the team in goals scored with two amongst the trio. The squad currently has eight players that have scored this season. Alexa Gruschow leads RPI in scoring (5), assists (3), shots (5) and has a power play goal on the campaign. Madison Marzario has an assist and a +4 rating, which leads the team.
Last Time in Troy
The Dutchwomen were shutout the last time Union was in Troy in a 3-0 defeat. Eleeza Cox scored a pair of goals while Kelly O'Brien made 12 saves in the game. Shenae Lundberg made 21 saves in the third period, finishing with 34 saves on the night.

Route 7 Rivalry
Union comes into the match trailing the all-time series lead with a 2-19-3 mark. The Dutchwomen's last win was at Messa Rink on October 30, 2004 when the Dutchwomen defeated the Engineers 4-1. At Houston Field House, the Dutchwomen have yet to win there.

Power Play Tandem
With Christine Valente's goal against Connecticut, she is currently tied for ninth with teammate Rhianna Kurio in program history with four goals on the man-advantage. The duo tied the single-season record in power play goals last season with three.

Kaminsky on the Power Play
Entering this week, freshman Jessica Kaminsky is tied for second in the ECAC and sixth in the nation with Regan Boulton of Quinnipiac in power play goals with two. Currently, Kelly Babstock of Quinnipiac leads the ECAC with three. She is also tied for the team lead in goals with Emma Rambo with two.

Clean Skating
The Dutchwomen have been the least penalized team in the ECAC. Union has served 22 minutes while Colgate has been the most penalized with 58.

Dutchwomen Power Play
In the six goals the Dutchwomen have scored this season, four have come on the power play. Union's power play percentage stands at 25% for the season.

New Kids on the Block
The Dutchwomen feature eight newcomers to the roster this season. Seven of the players are freshman while the other is a transfer. The freshman consist of Courtney Turner, Lizzy Otten, Jessica Kaminsky, Jamie Smith, Rebecca Babiak, Kathryn Tomaselli and Madeleine Dahl. Sophomore Haley Welch comes from Division III Elmira College where she played in 24 games, registered seven points on two goals and five assists.

Guess Who's Back?
Former Union goaltender Kate Gallaher has returned to coach the Dutchwomen as a Volunteer Assistant Coach for the 2012-13 season. The 2011 and 2012 Most Valuable Player for the Dutchwomen played in 65 games and held a .924 save percentage, both rank first in program history. In addition, her 1700 saves ranks third all-time in Union history. Gallagher was named ECAC Hockey Goaltender of the Week on November 11, 2011. The netminder made 85 saves in games against Clarkson and St. Lawrence. In the game against Clarkson, she converted 33 saves in a 2-1 victory. Against St. Lawrence, she made 52 stops in a 2-2 tie, a single-game career high.

Impact Freshman
Courtney Turner, Jessica Kaminsky, Kathryn Tomaselli and Madeleine Dahl have already made their marks on this season in their first yeat. Kaminsky and Tomaselli consist of half the goal-scoring for the Dutchwomen. Turner and Welch have also tallied assists in three games played. Dahl made her first collegiate appearence of the year making 11 saves in the game against Boston University.

Web Site Revamped
The Union College Athletics Department released a newly redesigned website on October 17 featuring a new enhanced look to the 26 sports the department covers. In addition, the department has a new video streaming system through Pack Network that will cover many of the events at Union for the 2012-13 year including Dutchwomen hockey.

Nailbiters
The Dutchwomen found themselves in 14 contests that were decided by one goal or less, matching the 2010-11 season in that category. Union improved from the 2010-11 season with a 2-8-4 record in games decided by one goal or less. So far this season, the Dutchwomen are 1-0-0.
