CANTON, NY - Courtney Turner earns her third goal of the season but the Dutchwomen concede six goals in a losing effort against St. Lawrence Saturday afternoon.
Despite being outshot 25-14 through two periods, the Dutchwomen (2-4-0, 0-2-0) offense was thwarted by netminder Carmen MacDonald, who made some timely saves to minimize any scoring chances. St. Lawrence (2-5-0, 2-0-0) then put the game away with a dominant third period, outshooting the Dutchwomen by a sizable 19-4 count.
St. Lawrence scored twice in the first period, taking a 2-0 lead into the first intermission despite being outshot by Union 15-5. Kelly Sabatine scored her fourth of the season at 6:41 on the power play, with assists going to Rylee Smith and Boulier for the 1-0 lead. Wand would followed at 16:36, as she picked a defenseman's pocket, moved in one-on-one with Union goalie Alana Marcinko and tucked it between her pads for her first goal of the season.
Wand would tack on her second goal at 12:29 of the second period, with classmate Ellie Williams earning an assist on the goal that made it 3-0. First-year student Kailee Heidersbach would score her first career goal for the Saints only 1:26 later, taking a pass from fellow rookie Jenna Marks and slipping a wrist shot under Marcinko's cross bar for a 4-0 cushion.
Union would score its lone goal only 24 seconds after Heidersbach's tally, as Courtney Turner pounced on a rebound in front and tucked it past MacDonald at 14:19 to cap the second period scoring, giving the Dutchwomen hope trailing 4-1 heading to the third.
However, St. Lawrence simply overpowered Union in the final stanza, earning nearly all of the quality scoring chances to assure itself of the victory. Rookie Abbey McRae jammed home a rebound at the 4:32 mark of the third for her second goal of the weekend, as Boulier and Brooke Fernandez were credited with assists for a 5-1 lead. Wand would then complete the hat trick in style, scoring a short-handed goal on a rush up the ice for her third of the game, assisted by Boulier, to bring the game to its final score of 6-1.
Wand's third goal would chase Marcinko, who finished with 23 saves for Union. Her replacement, Shenae Lundberg, made four saves in 4:03 in the third period. St. Lawrence won the special teams battle on Saturday, as the Saints were 1-for-4 on the power play and killed off all five Union power play tries.
Union will be coming back to Messa Rink as the Dutchwomen will host Syracuse for two games next weekend. The puck will drop at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, November 2 and 2:00 p.m. Saturday, November 3.
