Women's hockey returns home to host weekend series against Syracuse

Captain Maddy Norton and the Dutchwomen will be looking to rebound after being defeated by No. 4 Clarkson and St. Lawrence last weekend.

SCHENECTADY, NY - The Dutchwomen (2-4-0, 0-2-0 ECAC) return to Messa Rink after a five-game road trip to host Syracuse (4-4-0, 2-0-0 CHA). Friday, November 2, the puck will drop at 7:00 p.m. while on Saturday, November 3, the game will begin at 2:00 p.m. Follow the Dutchwomen all weekend on Twitter at UnionWHockey for in-game updates.

Last Time Out

The Dutchwomen traveled up north to open up ECAC play against No. 4 Clarkson and St. Lawrence. The Golden Knights blanked the Dutchwomen 6-0 although the score remained scoreless in the first period. Against the Saints, Courtney Turner scored the lone goal in a 6-1 defeat the following day.

  • Shenae Lundberg and Alana Marcinko shared the goaltending duties over the weekend. Lundberg had 30 saves in the match against Clarkson and made a brief appearence against the Saints with four saves while Marcinko made 29 saves in the losing effort.
  • Courtey Turner scored the only goal on the weekend as she now has scored in consecutive games for the first time in her brief career. Jessica Kaminsky and Stefanie Thomson assisted the Turner goal in the second period.

Scouting Syracuse

Syracuse comes into this weekend's matchup splitting two games with Connecticut on the road. The Orange have won four of their last six games after losing their first two games against New Hampshire and Northeastern.

  • Laurie Kingsbury has tallied five goals and four assists this season, each of those leads the Orange.
  • Shiann Darkangelo also has five goals on the season, including two game-winning goals.
  • Kallie Billadeau has posted a shut-out in her three wins this season, most recently against Connecticut in which she made 13 saves in the win.

Last Time Against the Orange
The Dutchwomen were in Syracuse the last time these two programs played. Back on October 21, 2011, Union rallied from a 2-0 deficit in what became an overtime win and the first win Union had against Syracuse on a Chelsey Heinhuis goal. The following day, the Syracuse offense scored five-unanswered goals in the third period in a come-back win for the Orange.
 
Freshman Showdown
Courtney Turner and Laurie Kingsbury each are leading their respective teams in goals and points this season.
 
Thomson Sharing the Puck
Forward Stefanie Thomson tallied her fourth assist in the loss against the Saints. Her four assists on the season is a career-high for the junior. Last season, she scored seven goals and three assists.

Power Play
The Dutchwomen are 2-1-0 on the season when they score on the power play. When Union goes scoreless on the man-advantage, the Dutchwomen are 0-3. In addition, seven of the 10 goals Union has scored have been on the power play. Syracuse's power play percentage stands a 15.2% this season.
 
Edging Out
The Dutchwomen found themselves in 14 contests that were decided by one goal or less, matching the 2010-11 season in that category. Union improved from the 2010-11 season with a 2-8-4 record in games decided by one goal or less. The Dutchwomen have matched their win total from the previous season with a 2-0-0 record in one-goal games.

Against the CHA
Against current members of College Hockey America, the Dutchwomen are 5-13-1 in their career. Union's most recent matchup against a CHA member was against Syracuse last year. in which the two teams exchanged wins.

Even Strength
The Dutchwomen have managed to stay out of penalty troublle thus far. This season, Union has averaged seven minutes of penalty time per game, the second lowest in the ECAC.
 
Turner and Kaminsky
Courtney Turner and Jessica Kaminsky have five of the Dutchwomen's 10 goals this season. Turner is ranked second among all freshman in goals scored with three. She is also ranked tied for 15th in points with five. Kaminsky ranks 24th in the conference with four points as she has tallied a pair of goals and assists in six games thus far.
 
Empire State of Mind
In games played in the state of New York, the Dutchwomen are 2-2-0 this season.

Syracuse comes into the matchup ranked second in the CHA in shots on goal with 323, averaging approximatley 40 shots a game.
 
Goal Shortage
The Orange have conceded 15 goals this season and hold a 1.86 goals against average. Additionally, Syracuse's save percentage ranks second in the CHA with a .921.
 
Special Teams Collide
Union boasts a power play percentage of 24.1%, which ranks fifth in the ECAC. The Orange's penalty kill unit has produced an 80.6 penalty kill percentage that is fourth in the CHA.
 
Overtime?
Union's last overtime win came against the Orange as Chelsey Heinhus scored the game-winning goal for the Dutchwomen. Last season, the Dutchwomen were 1-5-2 in overtime games. Union has yet to play an overtime game this season.

Like Opponents
Syracuse and Union have both played the Connecticut Huskies this season. The Orange played two games against Connecticut, exchanging wins on October 26 and 27. Union defeated the Huskies in their only matchup 3-2 back on September 29 in the season opener.

Union has blocked 88 shots this season while their opponents have only blocked 49. Three skaters are in double figures in shots blocked. Maddy Norton leads the way with 13 while Ashley Johnston and Haley Welch have 11 and 10 apiece.
