TROY, NY –
Sophomore defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere, senior forward Wayne Simpson and junior forward Matt Hatch scored in a three-goal second period that helped lift No. 9/10 Union (4-1-1, 1-0-0 ECAC Hockey) to a 4-2 win over RPI (1-2-2, 0-1-0 ECAC Hockey) at Houston Field House.

Sophomore forward Daniel Ciampini scored in the first period for Union, which improved to 19-4-4 against RPI since the start of the 2004-05 season.

RPI's Jacob Laliberte scored at 6:39 of the third period to cut Union's lead to 4-2, but junior goaltender Troy Grosenick (31 saves) was solid the rest of the way in net.

Union got off to a fast start, as Ciampini gave the Dutchmen a 1-0 lead with his first goal of the season.

Senior forward Kyle Bodie set up the play with a pass to senior defenseman Greg Coburn a pass from the corner. Coburn fired a shot that appeared to be going wide of the RPI net until Ciampini deflected the puck past Diebold at 6:39 to give the Dutchmen a 1-0 lead.

Grosenick made his best save of the frame later in the period, as a defensive zone turnover left RPI's Zach Schroeder all alone with puck at the right circle. Schroeder skated in alone and put a backhand shot on net, but Grosenick was there to make the stop at 12:51.

After going scoreless in three power play opportunities in the first period, Union finally capitalized on their first man advantage of the second period, when RPI's Guy Leboeuf was whistled on a hit from behind at 2:28.

A faceoff win by Kyle Bodie went directly back to Gostisbehere, who fired a one-timer past Diebold at 4:06 to give the Dutchmen a 2-0 lead.

RPI answered midway through the period on a 4-on-3 power play opportunity. Grosenick turned away a shot by RPI's Jacob Laliberte, but Laliberte regained control of the puck behind the net and fed Nick Bailen, who fired a shot into the top left corner at 8:29.

With momentum on RPI's side, Union scored two late goals in the period to regain control of the contest. Simpson singlehandedly gave Union a two-goal lead, blocking a shot by RPI's Nick Bailen at the point, and racing off the other way on a breakaway. Simpson put a backhand shot past Diebold at 17:40 to give Union a two-goal lead.

Just over a minute later, Union made it 4-1, as a failed clear attempt by RPI gave Coburn the puck at the point. His shot from the left point deflected to Hatch, who found an open net from in close at 19:00.

Union will take on RPI tomorrow night at Messa Rink in a contest that begins at 7:00 p.m.
