CLINTON, NY -- Senior guard
Joe Mason scored a career high and game best 25 points and pulled down seven rebounds as the Union College men's basketball team defeated Utica College, 86-69 in the consolation game of the Hamilton College Tournament at Scott Field House Sunday afternoon. The Dutchmen improved to 2-1 while the Pioneers fell to 1-3.
Keven Donohue had a double double with 13 points and a game high 11 rebounds along with four assists and three steals for the Dutchmen.
Evan Croll scored 12 points and
Terell Winney added 11 points. Union got five assists from
Cal Shorey and had 21 assists on the night. The Dutchmen shot 51% for the game, including 53% in the first half when Union took a 46-33 lead into the break. Union had a rebounding edge of 41-35 and shot 80% from the charity stripe.
Mason and Donohue were named to the All-Tournament Team.
Utica also had four players score in double figures. Aaron Nevins and Connor Maisch scored 14 points each, and Jeff Ward added 11 for the Pioneers. Matt Baldwin scored 10, and Chris Jeffers had a team high 10 rebounds. The Pioneers had a 43% shooting mark on the night and made just 48% from the free throw line.
The Pioneers got to within eight in the second half when Maisch made two free throws to make it 54-46. But the Dutchmen went on a 19-10 run capped by a Donohue three pointer with 7:14 left for an 18 point advantage, 73-55.
Union hosts SUNYIT Wednesday night at 8 p.m. at the Viniar Athletic Center home opener.
