SCHENECTADY, NY -- Senior guard
Joe Mason scored 19 points with six rebounds and five assists as the Union College men's basketball team opened the home season with a 74-51 win over non-league foe SUNYIT at the Viniar Athletic Center Wednesday night. The Dutchmen are now 3-1 on the season while the Wildcats fell to 0-2.
Mason also added four steals and made seven of his 11 shots.
Keven Donohue scored 13 points with five rebounds and was honored prior to the game for becoming the 18th player in program history to record 1,000 career points. He achieved that mark in the season opener at Hartwick on November 20.
Brian DeBisschop scored 10 points off the bench along with five boards and
Keith Callies added six rebounds for Union.
Laurent Firlotte also had five boards in the freshman's first home game. Union was 47% from the floor, including 54% in the first half that featured 14 made shots out of 26 attempts.
T'Andre Richardson led SUNYIT with 17 points and Derek Rowe posted a double double with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Kaleel Johnson had 10 rebounds and eight points and both teams finished with 44 rebounds. The Wildcats shot 32% for the game, and were held to 27% in the first half as Union led 38-21 at the break.
The Dutchmen led by as many as 27 five times, including 74-47 with 1:31 to play after a three pointer by
Ethan Lubowitz.
Union hosts SUNY Cobleskill for another non-league game on Saturday, December 1 at 4 p.m.
