SCHENECTADY, NY – Sophomore defenseman
Shayne Gostisbehere scored a go-ahead power play goal at 3:23 of the third period to lift No. 8/8 Union men's ice hockey (8-2-1) to a 4-1 win over Penn State (6-5-0) in front of 1,512 fans at Messa Rink.
Junior goaltender
Troy Grosenick returned from a lower body injury and made 37 saves to earn the win in net for the Dutchmen. Grosenick's counterpart Matthew Skoff was outstanding in net for the second consecutive night, stopping 42 shots.

Daniel Ciampini had a goal and an assist, scoring in the opening frame for the Dutchmen, who notched four goals in a contest for the seventh time in 11 games this season.
Ciampini got Union off to a good start in the first period, giving the Dutchmen a 1-0 lead with a goal in the opening 10 minutes. Senior defenseman
Greg Coburn fired a shot from the left point that deflected off of Skoff and into the goal crease. Ciampini poked the puck across the goal line at 7:21 for his fifth goal of the season.
Penn State would tie the game early in the second period, as leading scorer David Glen jammed in a rebound on the near post at the :50 mark for his seventh goal of the year, tying the game at 1-1.
Skoff was at his best during the second period, stopping all 17 Union shots against, keeping Union off the scoreboard as the Dutchmen earned three consecutive power plays. His best stop of the frame came at 17:38, with Union on the power play, as Skoff slid from right to left to stop a Carr wrist shot.
The game remained tied heading into the third period, but Union would finally capitalize on the man advantage, with Brian Dolan in the penalty box on a cross-checking call at 2:59. Senior forward
Wayne Simpson fed Gostisbehere at the point, and he fired a low slapshot past Skoff at 3:23 to give Union the lead for good.
Union finished the night 1-for-4 on the man advantage, while holding Penn State scoreless in four power play chances
Bennett would add his first goal of the season on a deflection at 8:08 to give the Dutchmen a two-goal cushion. Senior defenseman
Ryan Forgaard fired a long wrist shot from the left point toward Bennett, who deflected the puck down past Skoff to give Union a 3-1 lead.
Carr would add an empty net goal at 18:48 to seal the win for the Dutchmen, who improved to 9-1-3 in non-conference home games since the start of the 2010-11 season.
Union will return to league play next weekend at Messa Rink, starting with a Friday night contest against Quinnipiac at 7:00 p.m.
