DAYTONA BEACH, FL -- Senior forward
Keven Donohue scored 16 points with nine rebounds to lead the Union College men's basketball team to a 56-49 win over Elmira College in the Land of Magic Classic Saturday night. The tournament is held at the ICI Center and is hosted by Embry-Riddle. Union is 8-1 and won for the seventh straight time, while Elmira fell to 0-9 on the season.
Donohue has scored in double figures in all nine games, and his nine rebounds were a game high. Joe Mason scored 13 points and Evan Croll pulled down seven board for Union. The Dutchmen shot 34% but had a major advantage on the boards, outrebounding Elmira 46-29.
Union is 8-0 in the month of December for the last two years (5-0 in 2011). The Dutchmen are 12-1 in December in the past three seasons, including a 4-1 mark in 2010, with one more game on tap this month, tomorrow.
Elmira was led by Neil Randolph and Chris Cassidy, as each player scored a game high 17 points. Cassidy's four rebounds were the leading figure for his squad, which shot 36%. Derrick Vogel had a game best five assists.
The Dutchmen led 29-21 at the half and led by 10 with 7:33 left in the second half as Ryan Whelpley made a free throw to complete a three point play for a 45-35 lead. A three point play by Cassidy with 18 seconds left pulled Elmira to within three at 52-49, but the Dutchmen made all four free throws in the final seconds to close out the victory.
Union concludes play in the tournament Sunday. The tourney includes eight men's teams and the Dutchmen will play Wartburg at 4 p.m. Sunday.
