Dutchwomen fall to Princeton in final game of the season

BOX SCORE

PRINCETON, N.J.
- The Union College women's hockey team fell 3-0 to Princeton University on Saturday in the final game of the 2011-2012 season. The Dutchwomen end the year with a 4-26-4 overall record and a 2-18-2 mark in the ECAC, while the Tigers move to 12-13-4 and 10-10-2.

Princeton received goals from Sally Butler, Ali Pankowski and Denna Laing, as well as one final home shutout from senior goaltender Rachel Weber, to cap a perfect weekend at Baker Rink. One day after a hard-fought one-goal win over Rensselaer, Princeton controlled play throughout the contest against Union.

After a scoreless first period, Butler scored her team-leading 14th goal of the season off a centering pass from Heather Landry, who picked up her sixth assist of the season. Following a Union tripping penalty, senior Paula Romanchuk, one of seven members of the Class of 2012 to be honored during Senior Day, sent a pass from behind the goal to freshman defenseman Pankowski, who fired in a power-play goal. It was the third goal of the season for Pankowski, who gave the swarming Princeton defense a little insurance to work with.

The Princeton defense was strong, especially in the second period when it held the Dutchwomen to only four shots. The Tigers built the lead to 3-0 when Laing took a pass from Butler and scored her ninth of the season. Union only managed five more shots in the third period, but Weber made five of her 15 saves to record the shutout.

Senior netminder Kate Gallagher made 28 saves throughout the contest, including 12 in the third period.

The Dutchwomen end the season with the first ever defeat of Clarkson University in school history, the first ever tie of St. Lawrence University in school history, and the most assists and most points scored in the Dutchwomen's Division I history in a single season with 78 and 129, respectively.

Union wishes the best of luck to seniors Emilie Arseneault, Lauren Cromartie, Molly Kate Devin, Kate Gallagher, Chelsey Heinhuis, Lauren Hoffman, Kayleigh Melia and Dania Simmonds!
