SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Rhianna Kurio and
Jessica Kaminsky tied up the match with goals in the second period. However, New Hampshire pulled away in the third period with a pair of goals by Megan Armstrong to give the Wildcats a 4-2 victory over the Dutchwomen at Messa Rink Tuesday evening.
New Hampshire opened the game with a strong shot advantage and possessing the puck in the Union defense. The Wildcats were able to open the scoring on a 2-on-1 rush as Arielle O'Neill finished off a pass from Kristina Lavoie to put New Hampshire up 1-0.
Kurio was able to spark the Union offense a bit after drawing a hooking penalty on Kailey Chappell with approximately five minutes remaining. However, the New Hampshire penalty kill kept Union to just one shot on the man-advantage.
The Dutchwomen came out of the first intermission seeking the equalizer as
Stefanie Thomson,
Ashley Johnston and Elsa Brusestle all had scoring chances but were thwarted by netminder Jenn Gilligan. Kurio managed to level the score as she weaved by the Wildcats defense and beating Gilligan stick side to level the score.
Momentum looked to be in Union's favor until a holding the stick call was made by
Bryanne Panchuk to give New Hampshire their first power play. The Wildcats wasted no time as Hannah Armstrong put away the loose puck off a deflection by Megan Armstrong to give New Hampshire the lead again.
Just 35 seconds later, Union responded with another equalizer.
Jessica Kaminsky was on the doorstep, as Gilligan could not corral the
Courtney Turner shot in which the left-winger was able to sneak it by to level the score again.
Union found themselves in penalty trouble in the third period as
Rebecca Babiak and Panchuk served penalties. New Hampshire was able to capitalize again as the 10
th best power play unit in Division I took the lead for the third time in the game. Megan Armstrong scored from the high slot as it went over netminder
Shenae Lundberg's glove to give New Hampshire their third goal.
The Wildcats kept the puck in the offensive third as Lundberg kept the Dutchwomen within striking distance, making 32 saves on the night. However, New Hampshire added an insurance goal as Megan Armstrong tallied her second goal of the period as she rung the post with the puck ricocheted off the back of Lundberg and in the net. The Dutchwomen could not rally in the final moments as New Hampshire prevailed in the game, 4-2.
Lundberg drops to 6-9-3 on the season while Gilligan earns the win and improves to 5-1-1, making 26 saves in the match. Each team scored on the power play as New Hampshire went 2-for-3 while Union tallied one on three chances. Shots and faceoffs were in favor of New Hampshire with advantages of 36-28 and 24-19 respectively.
Union (7-12-3, 0-7-3) will play their fourth game in a span of seven days, as the Dutchwomen will travel to Dartmouth to compete on Friday, January 18 at 7:00 p.m. New Hampshire (8-11-4, 4-4-1) will travel to Connecticut to take on the Huskies for a weekend series starting on Saturday, January 19 at 1:00 p.m.
