Women's hockey battles in 2-1 loss against Rensselaer

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Kelly McGrath scored a power play goal in the second period to level the score but two goals from Taylor Horton gave Rensselaer (7-15-3, 5-7-1) the 2-1 victory over Union (7-15-3, 0-10-3) at Messa Rink Friday evening.

Horton notched her first goal of the game on the power play late in the first period. She was set up in front with passes from Jordan Smelker and Jenn Godin to beat netminder Shenae Lundberg on the one-timer.

Kelly McGrath leveled the score temporarily as the Dutchwomen were on their second power play of the night as the sophomore fired in a slap shot from the slot to beat Kelly O'Brien with 3:51 remaining in the second. McGrath was able to get a clean look towards the net with Courtney Turner and Bryanne Panchuk drawing defenders, giving the defenseman a clear shooting lane.

Early in the third period, Horton tallied her second goal of the night as Toni Sanders and Jenn Godin was able to set up the senior in front and find the back of the cage.

Union was seeking another game-tying goal as Lundberg came off the ice with 1:34 remaining. Despite numerous chances, the Dutchwomen could not get another goal as the Engineers came away with the 2-1 victory.

O'Brien (6-13-2) was credited with the win making 23 saves while Lundberg (6-12-3) finished with 28 stops in the defeat.

Both teams netted power play goals as Rensselaer went 1-for-5 while Union was 1-for-3 on the night. Faceoffs and shots were in the Engineers' favor with a 24-20 and 30-24 advantage.

The two teams will meet again tomorrow, January 26 as the Dutchwomen will visit Houston Field House for the second time this season with the puck dropping at 3:00 p.m.
