Keven Donohue scored 26 points with a career high 18 rebounds and
Terell Winney scored a career best 26 points to lead the Union College men's basketball team to an 87-81 win over Clarkson University at the Viniar Athletic Center Friday night. Union is off to the program's best start in 56 years.
The win for the Dutchmen was their ninth straight and they improved to 10-1 overall and 2-0 in the Liberty League. The Golden Knights fell to 8-2 and 0-1 in league play. The 10-1 start is the best for Union since the Dutchmen started with an 11-0 mark in the 1956-57 season. That team finished with a record of 13-3 for Coach Tom Cartmill. Numerous previous teams have started 9-1, including last season's squad. The '56-57 squad won its 10th of the season on January 12, 1957 in Rochester.
Donohue had his fifth double double of the season and he has four double doubles in the past five games against Clarkson. He has averaged 24.7 points and 11.0 rebounds in the last three against the Golden Knights. Winney made eight os his 11 shots from the floor including six of seven three point attempts.
Joe Mason had a game best seven assists and 18 points and
Matt Petrone scored 10 for Union, which had a commanding 40-25 advantage in rebounds. The Dutchmen shot 50% for the night and made 85% at the line.
Clarkson had five players in double figures, led by Marques Charlton's 17 and Felix Abongo's 15. Jerry Coleman and Charles McAllister scored 12 each and John Coleman had 10 with four assists and a team high eight rebounds. The Golden Knights shot 49%.
Clarkson had a 39-37 lead at halftime. The guests led by four at 58-54 with 12:45 left, but Union went on a 19-4 run for an 11 point lead at 73-62 with 7:23 left on five straight points by Winney. Clarkson got to within two at 83-81 with 44 seconds left but Union made four free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.
Union will host Liberty League opponent Bard Saturday at 4 p.m.
