SCHENECTADY, NY -- Union saw a two-goal lead evaporate, and encountered an early change in goal, but still managed to post a 3-3 tie with Bowling Green in the season opener for both teams. The series concludes tomorrow night at Messa Rink.
Eli Lichtenwald -- one of seven freshmen in the lineup -- and
Matt Hatch tallied first period goals to give Union a 2-0 cushion after 20 minutes. Rookie goaltender
Alex Sakellaropoulos was then pushed into action replacing
Colin Stevens, who left just six minutes into the game after a goal-mouth collision with a BG skater. Stevens' status is unknown for tomorrow.
Bowling Green stormed back with a pair of second-period goals scored less than two minutes apart from Dan DeSalvo and Pierre-Luc Mercier to even the score. Union seized a 3-2 lead behind a
Daniel Carr power play goal at 13:04 of the second period, before BG pulled even with jsut 1:56 left in the period on Bryce Williamson's tap-in on the man-advantage.
Union finished with a 27-25 shot advantage, and had several quality scoring chances denied by Falcon goaltender Tommy Burke, who made 24 saves.
