SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Union College women's ice hockey team will hit the New York Thruway on Saturady for a 2 p.m. matchup with Syracuse.

This will be the ninth meeting between the Dutchwomen and the Orange after the teams split a series at Messa Rink a year ago. The Orange lead the all-time series against Union 6-2.

Last Time Out
Last weekend the Dutchwomen traveled to Happy Valley for the first ever women's hockey game at Penn State University's newly-constructed Pegula Arena. The Dutchwomen spoiled the opener for the Nittany Lions after senior forward Stefanie Thomson scored a third period goal to give Union a 2-1 win. The rematch on Saturday went in favor of the Nittany Lions as an identical number of goals were scored but in the favor of the home team.
  • Union struck first when sophomore forward Courtney Turner notched her third goal of the season on the power play 14:48 into the opening period. Turner put Union ahead just 14 seconds into the advantage, tipping in a shot from the top of the zone by senior captain Maddy Norton. It was Norton's third assist of the season.
  • In the third period, the back-and-forth action tipped to the Dutchwomen when Thomson scored the game-winning goal on a feed from senior defensemen Ashley Johnston.
  • The Dutchwomen had two power plays and both shots found the back of the net as they went 100% on the evening.
  • Junior goaltender Shenae Lundberg stood strong between the pipes for the Dutchwomen after stopping 23 of the 24 shots she faced.
  • On Saturday the Nittany Lions jumped out to the lead in the first period when Jill Holdcroft stripped a Dutchwomen defender and beat Lundberg with a deke to her right for the 1-0 lead 12:28 into the period.
  • Union answered the PSU goal when The second period momentum swung Union's way when the Dutchwomen capitalized on Nittany Lions penalty and tallied the tying goal off the stick of sophomore forward Courtney Turner. Her goal was set up by junior forward Bryanne Panchuck and senior captain Maddy Norton.
  • Penn State took the lead in the third period when a nice string of passes led to Amy Petersen sliding a pass in front of net that got past Sara Nielsen. The puck bounced off the boards to Jeanette Bateman who rifled a shot off the pad of Lundberg where Laura Bowman was able to clean up the game-winner.
  • Junior goaltender Shenae Lundberg continued her strong start by stopping 32 of 34 shots on the day. Lundberg ended the game just three saves away from 200 on the season and has compiled a .925 save percentage to compliment a 2.39 goals-against-average.
Last Time vs. the Orange
The Dutchwomen split a series with the Orange last year at Messa Rink on November 2nd (L, 2-1) and 3rd (W, 4-2).
  • It only took five minutes in the game for the Dutchwomen to get on the board when then freshman Rebecca Babiak dished off the pass to then sophomore Bryanne Panchuk who directed it towards the net to find then freshman Kathryn Tomaselli with the tip in for her second goal of the season.
  • Syracuse would battle back to earn a 2-1 win despite then sophomore goaltender Shenae Lundberg's 29 saves.
  • Then Dutchwomen offense exploded in the second meeting between the two squads, racking up a season-high four goals in a 4-2 win.

Scouting the Orange

The Orange are off to a similar start as the Dutchwomen, amassing a record of 2-4 in their first six games. The Orange opened the season by taking down Northeastern 4-1, a team that the very next week defeated the Dutchwomen at home. They followed that win with four straight losses to New Hampshire, Clarkson (2), and Providence. Last Saturday they salvaged their weekend series with Providence by taking a 4-1 win in game two of the series.
  • The Orange find their way to the penalty box often. They are currently ranked fifth in the nation in penalty minutes with 76 through six games.
  • Syracuse has allowed 2.17 goals per game, ranked 12th in the nation.
  • The Orange lost their top two scorers from a season ago. Senior Holly Carrie-Mattimoe graduated while sophomore forward Shianne Darkangelo transferred to the ECAC after joining Quinnipiac.
  • The Orange are led offensively by  their defensemen. Sophomore Nicole Renault is tied with sophomore forward Melissa Piacentini for points with four, while senior defenseman Brittney Krebs is tied with junior forward Allie Lacombe and freshman forward Jessica Sibley for the lead in goals with 2. Junior Nicole Ferrara is off to a slow start (1-1-2) after finishing in the top three in scoring just a season ago.
  • The Orange have an even split in experience along their blueline. Seniors Brittney Krebs and Akane Hosoyamada are joined by junior Kaillie Goodnough as the experienced blue line defenders. A pair of sophomores, Nicole Renault and Danielle Leslie are joined by freshmen Larissa Martyniuk to round out the top six defensemen for the Orange.
