Union Skates to 2-2 Overtime Tie at UConn

STORRS, CT –  For the second straight game, Union nearly doubled its opponents in shots, but had to settle for a 2-2 overtime tie against Connecticut in non-conference action from the Freitas Ice Forum.  The Dutchmen are now 1-2-2 following their road debut.

Union placed a season-high 49 shots on goal against UConn (0-2-1), but after taking a 2-0 lead in the first period and allowing a pair of goals in the second, couldn't find the equalizer. Last Saturday, the Dutchmen took 48 shots in a losing effort against Lake Superior State.

Union dominated the opening period, scoring twice and outshoting the Huskies, 16-6. Mark Bennett opened scoring with his first goal of the season, sweeping a loose puck past goaltender Matt Grogan.  Grogan initially stopped a shot from Sam Coatta (who was credited with an assist), but couldn't control the rebound.

Union's second goal came off the stick of Mike Vecchione, who deflected a Mat Bodie slapshot from inside the blueline at 17:24.  Kevin Sullivan earned his ninth assist of the season on the play.

Connecticut responded with two goals in the second period.  Billy Latta broke in on goaltender Alex Sakellaropoulos and tucked a backhander inside the post at 6:17.  Tyler Brouchard tied the contest at 12:35 one-timing a shot in front of the crease on a wraparound pass from Brent Norris.

Union had several near misses in the game as Daniel Carr and Matt Wilkins both hit posts, and Shayne Gostisbehere blasted a shot off Grogan's facemask on a 3-on-2 opportunity in overtime.  For the first time this season, Union was held scoreless on the power play (0-for-2) as just four penalties were called in the game.  The Dutchmen entered the game with the fourth-best power play percentage in the country.

With the tie, Union is still unbeaten on Huskie ice, sporting a 3-0-2 road record in the all-time series.  The teams played to a 2-2 overtime last season in Storrs.

Rick Bennett's squad returns to action next Saturday (Nov. 1), opening ECAC play at Dartmouth.
