Sam Coatta scored two goals and goaltender
Colin Stevens made a triumphant return in net as Union won its ECAC opener with a 7-2 win over Dartmouth at Thompson Arena. The seven goals were the most for Union dating to an 8-0 win over American International on Oct. 26, 2012.
Coatta scored Union's first two goals, starting with 3:07 left in the first period.
Mark Bennett carried the puck along the left dasher boards from his own zone and delivered a drop pass to Coatta in the slot, who lifted a shot over the shoulder of goaltender Charles Grant. Coatta used a backhander on his second goal and was once again assisted by Bennett at 1:57 of the second period.
Matt Hatch gave Union a 3-0 lead shortly thereafter, stuffing home a rebound at 3:59 of the second period. The Dutchmen then scored twice in a span of one minute, five seconds to open a 5-0 cushion. Freshman
Jeff Taylor scored his first collegiate goal as his slapshot deflected off the glove of Grant, who was making his season debut. Grant was replaced in goal by Cab Morris at 16:16 of the second period when
Daniel Carr went the length of the ice and rattled the post for his third goal of the season. In the process, Carr also tied Mario Valey-Tarbucco as the school's all-time Division I leader in career goals (59).
Carr also assisted on
Max Novak's goal at 10:34 of the third period. Carr won a puck battle behind the Dartmouth net and feed Novak, who buried a slapshot from the left faceoff circle.
Shayne Gostisbehere contributed with his third assist of the night on the play.
Stevens made his first appearance in Union's goal since the season opener and stopped 15 shots. His shutout bid was cut short by Andy Simpson's goal at 1:51 of the third period.
Freshman
Mike Vecchione added his third goal of the season, following up his own rebound with a shot from inside the left circle at 14:26 before Dartmouth's Eric Neiley closed the scoring with a wrist shot at 16:35 of the third period.
The Garnet and White finished with a 31-17 advantage in shots and have outshot their opponent in all six games this season.
Union (2-2-2, 1-0-0) travels to Harvard tomorrow night for a 7:00 p.m. faceoff.
