Dutchwomen open up ECACH play against Dartmouth and Harvard

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - The Union College women's ice hockey team will open up league play this weekend when they welcome Dartmouth and Harvard for single game matches at Messa Rink. 

This will be the 21st meeting between Union and both schools. The Dutchwomen look to change their fortune against both teams as they are winless in their previous 40 combined meetings. Union will host the Big Green on Friday night at 7 p.m. before the Crimson comes to town for an afternoon game starting at 4 p.m.

Last Time Out
Last weekend the Dutchwomen traveled to Syracuse for a single game against the Orange. Despite a two-point effort by junior Christine Valente, the Dutchwomen fell to the Orange 5-2. 
  • The Dutchwomen fell behind early with Orange tallies in the early first period and middle of the second period.
  • The Dutchwomen would tally their first goal off a shot from Valente. Valente scooped up a rebound from freshman forward Alli Devins's shot and netted it to cut the SU lead to one goal. Devins assist was the first point of her Union hockey career. Junior defenseman Alex Tancrell-Fontaine also tallied an assist on the play.
  • Union scored one last time at the 7:24 mark in the third period when sophomore forward Jessica Kaminsky intercepted a pass and brought it past the center line, passing to Valente, who gave it back to Kaminsky at the crease and sent it in to cut the Orange lead to two. 
  • The Dutchwomen had two power plays and both shots found the back of the net as they went 100% on the evening. 
  • Junior goaltender Shenae Lundberg made 22 stops in two periods of action in the 50th start of her career. 
  • Sophomore goaltender Madeleine Dahl saw her second action of the season racking up five saves in the third period. 
  • SU outshot the Dutchwomen 32 to 24. Senior defenseman Ashley Johnston led the Dutchwomen in shots with five.  The Dutchwomen went 0-4 on the power play while surrendering four power play goals to the Orange.
Scouting the Big Green
The Big Green are off to an 0-3 start after their late start. They traveled to Boston College on October 20th to open up the season. The Big Green suffered a 7-2 loss at the hands of the Eagles. The following weekend they hosted ECACH opponents Princeton and Quinnipiac, losing both contests 3-2 and 4-2 respectively. 
  • Despite their struggles early, the special teams units have been clicking for the Big Green. So far on the season they have registered three power play goals on 14 attempts (.214) while killing off 12 of the 13 penalties (.923) they have taken so far. 
  • Dartmouth is looking for new sources of offense as they lost four of their top-five leading scorers last season to graduation. Sophomore forward Lindsey Allen (7-7-14) and junior forward Karlee Odland (5-8-13)return as the leading scorers for the Big Green. Through the first three games Allen has racked up three goals (3-0-0) while Odland has been held off the score sheet.  
  • The Big Green are also inexperienced on the defensive side of the ice as senior Lauren Kelly and junior Morgan Illikainen are the only two upperclassmen along the blue line. They are joined by two sophomores  Zoe Brennan, Olivia Whitford and two freshman, Emma Korbs and Eleni Tebano to round out the defensive corps for Dartmouth. So far this year Tebano and Illikainen are providing the offense from the blue line by registering three points (0-3-3) and two points (0-2-2) respectively. 
  • Goaltending duties have been split between senior Lindsay Holdcroft and freshman Robyn Chemago. Neither has impressive numbers but Holdcroft does have one more start. So far Holdcroft is 0-2-0 with a 5.06 GAA and a .815 Save %. Chemago's numbers are slightly better with a 3.05 GAA and .880 Save %.
Scouting the Crimson

The seventh ranked Crimson come into Messa Rink following their two home opening defeats of ECACH foes Quinnipiac and Princeton with scores of 4-2 and 4-0. They will travel to RPI for a match on Friday before arriving in Schenectady on Saturday for their match with the Dutchwomen. 
  • Harvard is skating with a short bench this year as Michelle Picard and Lyndsey Fry join head coach Katey Stone as members of the USA Hockey Women's National team that is competing in the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics. The Crimson have 16 skaters and 2 goalies on the active roster. 
  • The Crimson special teams has been great to start the season. They have registered five power play goals on eight attempts (.630) to start the season while killing off all eleven power plays again them. 
  • The Crimson are led offensively by junior forward Hillary Crowe who racked up 19 points (8-11-19) as Harvard's seventh leading scorer. With the graduation of last year's leading scorer Jillian Dempsey and Fry playing at the international level, the Crimson will also look to sophomores Mary Parker (12-12-24) and Miye D'Oench (10-3-13) junior Samantha Reber (5-19-24) to provide the offensive pop this season. So far Crowe has not disappointed as she has racked up three goals and two assists in the first two games. 
  • The Crimson blue line is led by Preseason All-ECAC team member Sarah Edney. The junior is joined by other upperclassmen Elizabeth Parker and Marissa Gedman. Four freshman, Abigail Frazer, Briana Mastel, Natasha Rachlin and Robyn White round out the defense for Harvard. So far Edney has not disappointed after registering two goals and an assist in the opening games. 
  • Goaltending duties have been handled so far by Emerance Maschmeyer, who was named the ECAC Hockey Goalie of the Week for her performances in the first two games of the season. Maschmeyer is 2-0 with a 1.00 GAA and a .969 save %. She is backed up by freshman Brianna Laing, a product of Noble and Greenough.
