SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - The Union College women's ice hockey looks to improve upon their 1-3 ECAC record at home when they host Brown and Yale on Friday and Saturday at the confines of Messa Rink.

The Dutchwomen will welcome the 1-4-1 Brown Bears to Schenectady on Friday starting at 3:30 p.m. Union played the Bears close in their previous two meetings last year with a 0-1 loss on Dec. 8 and 1-2 on Feb. 15. After their matchup with the Bears on Friday, the Bulldogs from Yale will take to the ice at Messa Rink starting at 4 p.m. Both teams will look to pull ahead after their previous two meetings a year ago finished deadlocked at one.

Last Time Out
Last weekend the Dutchwomen opened up ECAC road play by traveling to Coglate and Cornell. The road had their woes as the Dutchwomen fell to Colgate 5-1 and Cornell 8-1.
  • The Dutchwomen fell behind early after giving up two goals in the first 2:30 of the opening stanza. The Raiders leading scorers Jocelyn Simpson and Miriam Drubel tallied the first two goals that were separated by just 13 seconds. Colgate would add another goal with just 41 seconds remaining in the period after Cat Quirion picked up her first goal of the season.
  • Junior goaltender Shenae Lundberg was replaced by sophomore netminder Madeleine Dahl to begin the second period. Lundberg made eight saves in the first period.
  • Sophomore Kathryn Tomaselli picked up her third goal of the season early in the third period off a feed from senior forward Elsa Bruestle and fellow senior Maddy Norton, who registered her sixth point of the season on the play.
  • Union went 0-5 on the power play in the game.
  • Colgate goaltender Brittney Brooks finished the game with 20 saves while Dahl racked up 17 saves in two periods of relief.
  • The Dutchwomen were dominant in the faceoff circle, winning 26 draws to Colgate's 17. Senior forward Mac Purvis and sophomore forward Rebecca Babiak each registered 9 wins on the night. The 26 wins marks the first time the Dutchwomen have won the faceoff battle this year.
  • On Saturday The Big Red converted three of their four power play opportunities to help propel them to the 8-1 victory. The Dutchwomen scored their only goal on the power play as they went 1-5 on power play opportunities on the afternoon.
  • Senior defenseman Ashley Johnston tallied her second goal of the season on the power play. Sophomore forward Jessica Kaminsky circled behind the net and fed the puck to junior forward Christine Valente who was positioned along the left-side boards. As Kaminsky circled to the top of the crease, Valente dished the puck to Johnston who gathered the pass and fired a shot to the top right corner of the net through the Kaminsky screen. Valente and Kaminsky received assists on the play.
  • The Dutchwomen registered 30 shots in the game, which is the second time this season they have hit the 30-plus shot mark. Senior forward Elsa Bruestle led the Dutchwomen in shots with 5.
  • Junior goaltender Shenae Lundberg made 23 saves on the evening, including 11 in the second period alone. Cornell replaced Lauren Slebodnick with Paula Voorheis in the second period. Slebodnick was credited with the win after making 10 saves in the first period.
  • The Dutchwomen blocked a total of 23 shots on Cornell's top-rated offense. Junior defenseman Alex Tancrell-Fontaine led the Dutchwomen in blocks with five. Senior defenseman Maddy Norton and junior defenseman Kelly McGrath also were part of the block party after recording four blocks a piece.
Scouting the Bears
The Bears are off to a slow start, racking up only 1 wins in their first six games and currently sit 11th in the ECACH standings. Brown started off their season with a weekend split with RIT before earning their first ECACH point of the season by playing to a 1-1 draw with Clarkson.  Since then the Bears have dropped three straight ECACH contests to St. Lawrence, Quinnipiac and Princeton after being outscored 13-4.
  • A lonely bright spot for the Bears has been their power play. They have converted three-of-14 attempts in the early going, giving them a 21.4 % conversion rate (9th in the country).
  • Like the Dutchwomen, the Bears have struggled on the penalty kill despite not taking many penalties. Brown has allowed six power play goals on 22 attempts good enough for a 72.7 % kill rate on the season. They sit just ahead of Union who has allowed 13 power play goals on 41 opportunities.
  • No Brown forward has taken the lead in the scoring department as only five players have recorded more than one point. Freshman forward Erin Conway leads the bears offensively with one goal and three assists. Senior forward Jessica Hoyle, who was second on the team in points a year ago (5-7-12) is one of four players who have registered two points early in the season. Sophomore forward Ariana Rucker (2-0-2) is the only Bear with more than one goal.
  • Brown is led defensively by senior captain Jennifer Nedow and fellow seniors Samantha Woodward and Kelly Kittredge. Nedow has been a steady sight along the blue line for the Bears, playing in every game since her freshman season. The Bears bring experience along the blue line with their top-two defensive pairings consisting of upperclassmen. The defensive corps is rounded out by a trio of sophomores and a freshman.
  • Senior Aubree Moore has started all six games for the Bears this year. Last year she started 16 games for the Bears, posting a 2.27 goals-against-average and .921 save-percentage. So far this year Moore has posted a record of 1-4-1 with 230 saves (.931 save-percentage), and 17 goals allowed (2.77 goals-against-average).
Scouting the Bulldogs

Yale finds themselves sitting at the bottom of the ECACH standings after compiling a record of 0-5-1 in their first six games. The Bulldogs started off the season by getting swept in a trip to Boston with a 4-3 loss to Boston College and 2-1 loss to BU. The Bulldogs went on to lose three straight games against ECACH opponents, including a their most lopsided defeat of the season on Nov. 11 against Clarkson (L, 0-7). They earned their first point of the season last weekend when they finished in a scoreless tie with #7 Quinnipiac.
  • Like Brown, Yale has struggled to score in the early part of the 2013-14 campaign. Their leading scorer, sophomore Jamie Haddad has recorded four points on one goal and three assists through the first six games. Only four other forwards have more than one point, including freshman Krista Yip-Chuck who leads the team in goals with two. Last year's third leading scorer, sophomore Janelle Ferrara (6-6-12) has racked up two assists in the first six games.
  • Yale is led defensively by two offensive-defensemen, senior Tara Tomimoto and sophomore Kate Martini. Martini and Tomimoto led the Bulldogs in scoring last year with 16 (6-10-16) and 14 (2-12-14) respectively. Senior Aurora Kennedy and junior Madi Murray are the other two upperclassmen along the blue line. They are joined by a sophomore and a pair of freshman to round out the defensive corps.
  • Junior goaltender Jaimie Leonoff has played in all but one period for the Bulldogs this season. She, like the team, is currently winless, but she posted a 44-save shutout performance against #7 Quinnipiac last weekend. She has posted 215 saves (.919 save-percentage) and has allowed 19 goals (3.32 goals-against average) so far this season.
