SCHENECTADY, NY -- Union suffered its first loss in ECAC Hockey play with a 5-3 setback to Colgate at Messa Rink Friday evening.
The Dutchmen (3-3-2, 2-1-0 ECACH) came out strong, building a 2-0 lead behind a pair of first period goals from senior
Daniel Carr. Â Carr struck on the power play at 4:04 (on an assist from
Mat Bodie), then answered 2:44 later with his sixth goal of the season.
Colgate (4-5-1, 2-1-0 ECACH) managed to score with nine seconds left in the first period on Darcy Murphy's short-handed tally, then evened the score 5:12 into the second period on Tylor Spink's shot from just outside the crease.
Union reclaimed the lead late in the middle frame, thanks to
Sebastien Gingras' one-timer which was setup on passes from
Matt Wilkins and
Matt Krug.
For the first time all season, Union was outshot by an opponent, and it caught up with the Dutchmen in the third period.
Colgate struck three times on goals from Darcy Murphy, Mike Borkowski and an empty netter from Tylor Spink. Â The Spink brothers finished with five points on the evening, with Tylor scoring twice and Tyson adding three assists. Â The Red Raiders posted a 30-21 edge in shots.
Colin Stevens made 25 saves in net for Union, while his counterpart, freshman Charlie Finn finished with 18 stops for Colgate.
Union continues its weekend homestand tomorrow night, playing host to Cornell at 7 p.m. in Messa Rink.
