Dutchmen Complete Sweep of Penn State With 5-4 Win

UNIVERSITY PARK, PA -- Daniel Ciampini scored with three seconds left in regulation to lift Union to a 5-4 come-from-behind victory before 5,177 stunned fans at the Pegula Ice Arena Sunday evening.

Ciampini weaved through the Nittany Lion defense and tucked a backhander past goaltender Eamon McAdam to help the 15th-ranked Dutchmen (8-3-2) extend their winning streak to five games, while also remaining unbeaten on the road (5-0-1).

Penn State built a 4-1 lead midway through the second period in a game that was dominated by special teams.  The teams combined for five power play tallies and one short-handed marker.

PSU opened a 2-0 lead in the opening period, scoring twice on the power play in the opening minutes. Freshman Zach Saar scored his first collegiate goal on a one-timer in the slot, the result of a rebound off the pads of Colin Stevens at the 3:58 mark. Defenseman Luke Juha followed at 8:06 with a wrister from the left faceoff dot, for his fourth goal of the year.

Mike Vecchione cut the lead in half with a wrist shot from between the circles over the stick side of McAdams at 6:06.

PSU then struck twice in a span of one minute, 26 seconds.  David Goodwin deflected a shot at 10:18 and David Glen was credited with a goal after a puck hit the boards and deflected off the knee of defenseman Jeff Taylor into the net at 11:43.  Freshman goaltender Alex Sakellaropoulos was inserted into the game at that point and Union responded twice before the end of the period.

Shayne Gostisbehere scored twice on the man-advantage, burying a wrist shot from the faceoff dot at 12:48 and ripping a low slapshot at 15:54.  It mark the second time this season Gostisbehere has scored twice in a game and the junior defenseman now has five goals in his last five contests.

Matt Hatch tied the contest at 4-4 on a wrist shot at 6:49 of the third period, setting up the dramatic finish. Union finished with a 43-23 shot advantage, outshooting its opponent for the 12th time in 13 outings.

Union returns to action this Friday (Dec. 6), hosting Princeton in ECAC Hockey action at Messa Rink.  Faceoff is 7:00 p.m.
