SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Colgate (10-19-3, 5-13-3 ECAC Hockey) rallied from 1-0 down to overcome a
Courtney Turner power play goal to defeat the Dutchwomen 2-1 at Messa Rink Friday night.
The Dutchwomen put forth a strong showing early as Union took advantage of two penalties for too many skaters on the ice. After Colgate killed off the first penalty conceding three shots, Union was able to come away with the goal on the second try. After a shot wide by
Kelly McGrath from the point,
Bryanne Panchuk was able to get the puck on target. Ashlynne Rando came up with the save but the puck trickled to an open
Courtney Turner. The freshman was able to backhand the puck past Rando for the game's first goal.
Colgate had a power play chance of their own towards the end of the period, as the Raiders were able to tally three of their nine shots of the period. However,
Shenae Lundberg came up stopping all eight shots to give the Dutchwomen the 1-0 advantage after the first period.
The Raiders penalty woes continued into the second period, as the Dutchwomen were able to get another two chances on the man-advantage. Rando this time around came up with nine saves of her own on the two penalty kills without surrendering a goal. Union had to kill a penalty of their own in the period as McGrath was sent to the penalty box for holding. However, the penalty unit for the Dutchwomen was able to contain the Raiders attack to just two shots. In the final moments of the second period, Brittany Phillips made a shot on net to Lundberg. The puck however was loose as Lundberg stopped a knuckling puck in which Jenna Klynstra crashed the net and jarred the puck through the pads to trickle in the net.
After being tied at one in the final period of play, the Colgate defense was able to clamp down on the Union offense. The Dutchwomen were just limited to two shots in the final period. Colgate's offense remained consistent, as they were able to fire in nine shots. Colgate's game-winning goal came with just 1:32 remaining in the period, as Jocelyn Simpson and Katie Case were able to find an open Taylor Volpe in the middle of the offensive third. Volpe's wrister flew over the shoulder of Lunderg to find the back of the net. Lundberg was pulled shortly after but the Dutchwomen could not even up the score as the Raiders rallied for the 2-1 victory.
Rando was credited with the win as she improves to 8-13-3, making 21 saves in the win. Lundberg is given the loss as her record stands at 6-19-3, tallying 25 saves in the match. Shots were in favor of the Raiders with a 27-22 advantage. The Dutchwomen won the faceoff battle with a 29-23 edge.
Union will conclude their season as they will host No. 3 Cornell for “Senior Night” as the puck will drop tomorrow afternoon at 4 p.m.
