SCHENECTADY, NY - The Union College women's ice hockey team opens their 2013-14 season on Saturday September 28 at the Freitas Ice Forum in Storrs, CT with a 2:00 p.m. matchup with the Connecticut Huskies.

This will be the fifth time these programs have met. The Dutchwomen took the win in last season's opener 3-2, but the Huskies leads the all-time series with a 2-1-1 record.

Last Time vs. Huskies

The Dutchwomen beat the Huskies 3-2 at Messa Rink on Sept. 29, 2012.

  • Then sophomore Christine Valente scored the game-winning power play goal in the third period to give the Dutchwomen a 3-2 victory.
  • Four of the five goals scored came on the power play, including the game winner.
  • Then senior Emma Rambo tallied in the second period for the only even-strength goal of the game.
  • Then freshman Jessica Kaminsky scored her first collegiate goal in the first period.
  • Then junior Stefanie Thomson ended the game with two assists, including the primary on the game-winner.
  • Then senior goaltender Alana Marcinko made 30 saves to earn her first victory of the season.

Scouting Connecticut

The Huskies finished 3-29-3 last season and were 1-8-2 against ECAC opponents.

  • The Huskies return their three leading scorers from 2012-13,  Kayla Campero (Jr.) (9-9-18), Michela Cava (So.) (10-7-17) and Sarah MacDonnell (Jr.) (5-12-17).
  • Senior goaltender Sarah Moses will look to win the battle between-the-pipes after seeing action in 12 games a season ago. Moses registered a 4.04 goals-against-average and .898 save-percentage.

Year Seven for Barcomb and Boe

The 2013-14 season marks the seventh season for head coach Claudia Barcomb, who came to Union after spending five seasons as an assistant coach at Harvard, her alma mater.

  • She also was a three year letterwinner and captained the 1999 squad to ECACH regular season and tournament championship.
  • Assistant coach Ali Boe is also in her seventh season and is a 2006 graduate of Harvard. She lettered four years and backstopped the Crimson to three-straight ECAC Hockey League Championship titles and three Frozen Four appearances.
Union Building Blocks

The Dutchwomen are coming off their best season in program history after posting a 7-23-4 record. Union will look to continue their steady improvement this year under direction of head coach Claudia Barcomb.

Dutchwomen Add Carpenito

Dutchwomen newcomer, Nicholas Carpenito, joins the staff as an assistant coach for the first time in 2013-14. Carpenito joins Union after departing Elmira College, where he helped the Soaring Eagles capture the 2013 Division III National Championship as an Assistant Coach and the Head Coach for the Women's JV program.

"We are excited to have Nick join our staff," Barcomb said. "He brings a great deal of energy and experience to our team and comes from a highly successful Division III program. I look forward to what he is going to add to Union Women's Ice Hockey."

Carpenito earned his Master's degree in General Education at Elmira College in June. A 2011 graduate of Northeastern University, Carpenito was a four-year member of the Men's Club Ice Hockey team.

Sophomore Scorers
The Dutchwomen's two leading scorers from 2012-13 return to the lineup after solid first years at the collegiate level. Sophomore Courtney Turner tallied 14 points (6-8-14) while playing all 34 games for Union as a freshman. Sophomore Jessica Kaminsky matched Turner's goal output with six and tallied six assists to tie junior Christine Valente for second on the team in points in 2012-13. Turner and Kaminsky will look to continue their early collegiate success en route to increasing the Dutchwomen's goal output for 2013-14.

Returning Offense

The Dutchwomen will return nine of their top ten scorers from the 2012-13 season. In addition to Turner and Kaminsky, junior forwards Christine Valente, Stefanie Thomson, and Bryanne Panchuk look to improve their offensive output after recording 12, 11 and 9 points respectively a year ago.

Offensive defensemen Alex Tancrell-Fontaine and Kelly McGrath look to add scoring from the blue to improve upon their 15 combined points from a year ago.

Veteran Blue Liners

The Dutchwomen defense features a depth of veteran leadership, including senior captains Maddy Norton and Ashley Johnston. A trio of juniors, Alex Tancrell-Fontaine, Kelly McGrath and Haley Welch, in addition to experienced sophomore Elizabeth Otten round out the top-six defensemen for the Dutchwomen. The group will look to lock down the blue line while improving on their combined 4 goals and 17 assists from last season.

Dutchwomen Goaltending Trio

Junior goaltender Shenae Lundberg will return between the pipes after posting an impressive .906 save-percentage and 2.85 goals-against-average in 30 games played last year. Sophomore Madeleine Dahl will battle for playing time after appearing in five games and posting an identical .906 save-percentage as a freshman in 2012-13. Newcomer Emma Pincott will look to provide support to the two veteran goaltenders.
