ALBANY, N.Y. -- Union College saw its winning streak against arch-rival Rensselaer halted at 10 games following a 2-1 setback in the second annual Capital District Mayor's Cup before 7,100 fans at the Times Union Center. The loss was just the second in 16 games for Union, which is now 16-5-3 on the season.
RPI's Mike Zalewski knocked in a loose rebound with 3:38 left in regulation for the game winner. Union pulled goaltender
Colin Stevens with 2:21 left in the third, but couldn't score the equalizer. Union's best scoring chance came off the stick of
Max Novak with a minute left, but RPI goaltender Scott Diebold made a glove save to preserve the win for the Engineers. The Dutchmen finished with a 29-20 advantage in shots.
Shayne Gostisbehere started the scoring at 8:04 of the first period, chasing down a puck along the left boards, circling behind the net, and tucking a shot on a wraparound inside the near post past Diebold. The shorthanded tally was Gostisbehere's seventh goal of the year.
Renssselaer (10-10-4) evened the contest at 5:17 of the second period, as Milos Bubela placed a backhander just under the crossbar.
Union returns to ECAC Hockey action next weekend, traveling to St. Lawrence on Friday (Jan. 31). The Garnet and White have only conference games remaining for the rest of the 2013-14 schedule.
