Hockey Dutchmen Suffer 2-1 Loss at St. Lawrence

CANTON, N.Y. -- Union suffered just its second road loss of the season in dropping a 2-1 decision to St. Lawrence at Appleton Arena Friday evening.  The Dutchmen (16-6-3/10-3-0) also dropped out of first place in ECAC Hockey, as Quinnipiac moved ahead by a point with a win tonight.  St. Lawrence (9-13-3/3-7-3), meanwhile snapped its nine-game winless streak.

Union, ranked third nationally in scoring offense (3.54), was held to a season-low one goal for the second straight game. The Dutchmen were without the services of starters Mat Bodie, Daniel Ciampini and Eli Litchtenwald, who were serving suspensions issued by ECACH.

SLU rookie defenseman Mike Graham scored the game-winner with his first career goal, skating into the slot and one-timing a pass from Jeremy Wick at 8:40 of the third period.

Union had tied the game earlier in the third period (at the 1:01 mark).  Forward Daniel Carr ripped a slapshot from the right circle that found the upper corner of the net.  In the process, Carr became Union's all-time leading Division scorer with his 132nd career point (fifth-best among active players).  Shayne Gostisbehere and Max Novak assisted on the play.

After a scoreless first period, St. Lawerence opened scoring with 6:50 left in the second period. Greg Carey found Drew Smolcynski rushing towards the net and flipped a pass that Smolcynski tucked backhanded inside the left post.  The assist was Carey's 173rd career point -- the most among active players in the NCAA ranks.

Union stays in the North Country meeting Clarkson Saturday at 7:00 p.m. in Potsdam.
