Dutchmen sweep dual meet with Springfield and Hartwick

Senior Zack Wahl captured three event victories to lead the Dutchmen to victory over Springfield and Hartwick on Saturday afternoon.

Springfield, MA – The Union College men's swimming team defeated Springfield and Hartwick in a dual meet on Saturday afternoon on the campus of Springfield College. The Dutchmen defeated Springfield by a score of 191 to 109 and Hartwick 189.5 to 104.5.

The wins were fueled by a combined 27 top-five finishes and 11 first-place finishes. Senior Zack Wahl led the Dutchmen with three event wins (1:57.49 in the 200 yard butterfly, 2:03.12 in the 200 Yard IM and 52.78 in the 100 yard butterfly). Other event winners included sophomore Matthew Hellauer (10:08.14 in the 1000 yard freestyle and 4:54.19 in the 500 yard freestyle), junior Andrew Welch (54.31 in the 100 yard backstroke and 2:00.31 in the 200 yard backstroke), sophomore Benjamin Nadareski (21.82 in the 50 yard freestyle) and freshman John Enquist (2:14.21 in the 200 yard breaststroke).

The relay teams also performed well. The 200 yard medley relay team of Welch, Enquist, Wahl and Nadareski captured first place with a time of 1:37.89. The 200 yard freestyle relay also went in the Dutchmen's favor as the squad of senior Billy Phillips, freshman Christopher Koster, senior Adam Herzog and Nadareski captured first place fifth a time of 1:28.9.

Sophomore Cameron Robertson led the Dutchmen divers with a second place finish in the three meter after a score of 270.55 and a third place finish in the one meter dive with a score of 234.55. Junior Jeremy Sagaille captured second place in the one meter dive and fourth place in the three meter.

Other notable finishers included Herzog, who captured second place in the 500 yard freestyle and third place in the 1000 yard freestyle, Phillips, who captured second place in the 100 yard butterfly and third place in the 50 yard freestyle, freshman Nathan Singer, who captured third place in the 200 yard breaststroke, freshman Dylan Mechanic, who captured third place in the 200 yard individual medley and Enquist, who captured second place in the 100 yard breaststroke.

The Dutchmen return to action on January 17 when they travel to Troy to take on Liberty League rival RPI at 6 p.m.
